This game is incredibly underrated. For the time it was released, it has stunning environments and attention to detail. The feeling of your choices actually meaning something was accomplished impeccably in this game. The story is incredible, the puzzles are challenging but not impossible, and the soundtrack is great. All around, its a great double hours of my life that are well spent!

STOP READING, GO PLAY!
Why are you reading reviews? This is a free mod. Try it out! There is literally no downside to just giving it a go. If you want some more nitty gritty stuff, you can keep reading.

Why Portal: Revolution is the best Portal 2 custom campaign
Portal: Revolution is the best mod of Portal 2 I have ever played, surpassing giants like Portal Reloaded and Portal Stories: Mel. The quality of this mod is outstanding, from the fresh main menu design to the upgrade to DX11 to Cascaded Shadow Maps (!!!!), this mod had an incredible amount of effort poured into it to make it the best custom campaign I have ever played.

Previously, the mod that I considered "the best" was Portal Stories: Mel. This mod took the environments and quality standards of Portal 2 mods up to 10. The main issue with it, however, was its difficulty and, IMO, overgrown chambers. In the Overgrown chambers, they seemingly were destroyed for no apparent reason. The difficulty of the chambers was also so high that they had to tone down the difficulty in later patches. Despite its flaws, however, it was still a good mod.

Then there is Portal: Revolution. This mod took the quality standards up to 70. The overgrown surface chambers are absolutely impeccable. The detail that went into the environments of this game is incredible. The addition of Cascaded Shadow Maps from CSGO makes the sunlight actually believable and more natural when compared to Projected Textures.

Of course, its not a Portal 2 mod without test chambers, which Revolution absolutely did not skip out on. The tests are complicated, but also doable. If you spend enough time thinking and experimenting, you will complete it. The solutions are incredibly satisfying when you find them, and you don't feel stupid because you missed an obscure detail that is required to complete the chamber. The mechanics they added back are well thought out and function well, unlike some of the hammer-logic jankiness I have played in many other mods.

Lets not forget the voice acting as well. Their performance is incredible, and actually feel believable. The cores seem like they actually are living in this world and not just a human speaking into a microphone. While the voice acting can be a bit loud in some places, its nothing adjusting the volume slider can't fix.

"It can't all be good, right?"
Enough of the good, what about the bad?

Other than a once-in-a-blue-moon bug that comes around, the experience is almost perfect. Also, this is an essentially day 1 build review, so there are obviously going to be a lot of bugs that get fixed in the coming weeks. The scarcity of these bugs is a testament to the quality of the testing that went into this game.

Conclusion
This mod is most certainly the best Portal 2 mod I have played, and I think that we have not even scratched the surface. This is the first release of Strata Source, and I cannot wait to see what amazing games get released with its full release. This mod is just a tasting of the incredible Portal 2 mods to come. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this genre!

Are you still reading? GO PLAY IT! Trust me, you absolutely will NOT regret it!

This game is incredible. From the fmc, voice acting, map design, story, environments, humor, and creativity, this mod is just incredible. It's difficult on hard mode, like REALLY difficult (I don't remember the pistol dropping an elite in one mag in hl2), but it's a good challenge. It's as close to another Half-Life campaign as we are gonna get in a while. Just try it! It's free! There is quite literally no reason to not try it.

Cool game, nice refresh of Half-Life. Would recommend playing original first, but it is a nice couple afternoons

For its length, its a good mod. Its got some issues, but it was still a fun playthrough.

The good
  • Good forest environments
  • Good music
  • Animations were alright, but were ported from hl2 mmod

    The Bad
  • Forest paths were too constricted, would have liked some more explorability
  • Combine are incredibly stupid. Nodegraphs could have maybe used some work
  • Gunship encounter on the tram ride was way to difficult. Little cover and too much health.
  • Animations and models could have used some work. Some models looked out of place (the wooden crate from csgo) and others looked outdated (ar2 looked crusty af, especially with ads [aim down sights])
  • Speaking of ads, its completely unnecessary. Too many hl2 mods are tryna include it, its pointless. This ain't cod, its hl2.
  • Sound files were missing from the game completely, or were being incorrectly referenced. Only subtitles worked, and they were very quick

TL;DR: Could have used some work, but still a fun play through

This mod is kinda weird. Its better than htdf, however it still has a lot to learn. The ADS feature is just pointless. The sniper scope is borderline useless. The Combine in the REQUIRED sniper section are neigh invisible. The storyline doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm usually for HL2 mods, but this mod has disappointed me. It tried to be unique but in the process lost its identity of being a HL2 mod. HL2 is action, action, slight pause, action. This game is pause, pause, walking, action, pause. Not only that, but in the first hour the game takes control of the player over 5 times. The cassete section, for example, was already a small room. There would be no negative benefit to having the player be able to walk around the room and waste more time, instead of being forced to look at these slightly modified and worse looking NPC models. The MP5SD is something that I really wanted to use, because the MP5 is cool, but not only did it not allow us to use it, but it the mod creators straight up ripped the model and sounds from CSGO. The Voice actors either didn't know what they were supposed to do or were just bad VAs. There was no emotion at all, and all the characters were forgettable.

TL;DR: Its a mod, but it struggles to understand what it is. It tries to be COD and HL2 at the same time, and fails horribly. Many areas look rushed or obviously didnt go through quality control. The Voice acting is rushed and the scripted sequences are rough. I do not recommend.

CS:GO Review
A classic FPS shooter never dies, it gets better. This game is very fun, especially coming from high-energy games like tf2. If you think this game is too hard to get into, do not just go to valorant. Keep trying and improving your aim.

(My lack of hours is due to me playing most of this offline, I have completed the game)

This is amazing. It adds lots of stuff while still keeping the original feel and gameplay of Half-Life mostly the same. Everything can be toggled on or off, the displacer cannon is super fun to use, the updated animations add some needed tweaks while not deviating too far from the originals, and the suppressed mp5 is so friggin cool. The original campaign does still have a few minor kinks that need to to addressed, but it's mostly just small stuff that doesn't contribute to gameplay that much.

The conclusion of Uplink is pretty cool, and it was a cool 15 minute experience. It's nice they included that little "demo".

The inclusion of USS Darkstar is Super cool tho. I, being a fairly new Half-Life fan, didnt even know that Darkstar existed, and now I think it's one of the coolest mods I have ever seen. Really cool that they included that in the official release.

Overall, great mod. I would recommend that any Half-Life fan play this game. It is honestly a great play for experience fans and new players alike.
