i really like this game. it's fun. i don't think as a 6 player party we've gone two maps in a row without at least one person in our party crashing. i'll update my review once they fix that.

season 2 update: ♥♥♥♥'s still broken

Ever wondered what a Gundam mod for Overwatch would look like? It's this. If you were hoping for a decent Gundam shooter, this ain't it.

the game has periods of ups and downs. if you're playing for coop, the AI is a bit too cracked at this moment, but I'd still recommend it. overall it's a fun game with good gunplay and a garbage community.

Battlefield 2042 is aimless. This game is so absolutely desperate to invoke memories of Battlefield games past, but only acknowledges them at a surface level. Look at the Battlefield Portal trailer on the store page: You'd think they brought back a bunch of factions, weapons, vehicles and maps from a bunch of previous Battlefield games. They didn't. You get a handful of weapons from the previous games, a few maps, and a couple of vehicles. I understand they can't remake the entire games and expansion packs, but it all feels so shallow. It doesn't help that the only games in the Portal right now are Battlefield 3, Bad Company 2, and 1942-- modern combat, modern combat, and specifically the contemporary elements of WW2. Neglecting Vietnam, 2142, Heroes, or Battlefield 1 makes it a homologous experience.

Battlefield 2042 itself is a game nobody wanted. The time to kill feels like it has more in common with Battlefield 2 in the worst possible way than any of the other modern games- it slows the game down to a maddening crawl. Specialists feel unnecessary, going against the idea that you're just a typical soldier on the battlefield. Instead, you're some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ YouTube vlogger showing off your cool murder toys telling your audience why fighting for both sides is based, actually.

The on-the-fly weapon customization, while clunky, is probably the best feature in the game. It's nice to be able to adjust what level of optic you want, whether or not you want a suppressor on your gun, or putting on a bipod when you're holding an area. Less impressive is getting 300 kills to unlock a flashlight. Vintage Battlefield in the worst possible sense.

The biggest problem right now is the lack of a player base. I imagine you'll find the game steeply discounted soon, as they're now averaging less than 5000 players on Steam at any given time. One of the flagship features of this title was supposed to be the 128 player multiplayer, but those servers just don't exist. Trying to play Battlefield Portal content with 128 people is impossible- I haven't seen a single server near capacity yet. I suspect I never will. Selecting the second highlighted game mode in Portal, a 1942 vs 2042 mode, resulted in the game putting me in a 3/128 person match, with nobody joining. This all very much feels like Hardline all over again.

The maps don't impress. Nothing stands out as a soon-to-be classic. Levolutions may have been underwhelming before, but this game's equivalent seems absolutely pointless. There's nothing new that made me think I'd love to play that level again. You're going to want to spend your time playing the updated classic maps instead.

DICE has always set out to make the Battlefield games look visually chaotic, but this game has gone too far. The visual identification of enemies in this game is ridiculous. It's impossible to read even nearby enemies with the amount of smoke effects everywhere. It might look pretty, but it results in a game frustrating to play.

I strongly recommend against playing this game. It's not a fun trainwreck to point fun at. It's just a sad, middling affair. It's a series of poor decisions, likely pressured on by a publisher who gave the developers an impossible time frame mid pandemic, forcing it out before the holiday season to meet their quarterly projections. The consequence of such being that they may have killed one of their longest running original franchises.

This game is incredibly difficult. Not due to the notorious gameplay, mind you. No, my issue is the inability to load in properly. Once in four matches have I loaded in properly (I won the one that I load into). I get an infinite loading screen. Closing the game too quickly leaves me unable to rejoin the game. Closing it after too long leaves me dead on arrival.

The other times I've tried to play this game, I was unable to connect to the master server.
