RIP, didnt knew that things were that different in the US than in Europe, I take back what I said then. (I pay like 10 bucks a year for my number, since every 1.5 years I have to charge it 15 bucks...)

That's impressive... Literally no one in the comments approved of this change. It's as if VALVe released a game and it got zero positive reviews...

Valve has experience with this... *cough* artifact *cough*

Jokes aside, I can live with it, but I see why this is annoying and expensive for others and kinda uncalled for.

I'm also against this change too.

Is this a proactive change or is it in response to something that already happened?
With the vast number of accounts on Steam, including DEV & moderator accounts, yes, rare occurances happen every day on Steam and many other platforms of this magnitude. I'm not a DEV, nor publisher, but as a concearned gamer i have been asked to come to 3 games were things went badly wrong with DEV/moderator accounts; 2 of which were one-man game-companies i have to add.

In the one case where the hackers indeed got all the way into the game software and servers, we were very lucky they were trolling hackers and not virus spreading criminals. I feel for you all with the extra hassle, but that's just how this World spins.

It probably doesn't apply to them. Remember it's one rule for them and a different one for us.

Thanks. I hate it.

Steam Guard is already annoying enough. Please just give us TOTP 2FA instead of using insecure SMS and your proprietary 2FA.
Cryptic Oct 10, 2023 @ 3:50pm
This should honestly be optional. Steam guard is already so incredibly annoying and tedious to use when I'm in the middle of working and this seems like even more of a pain in the ass

Every single time I upload a build or sign in, it already is asking me for a code and for me to do the two step authentication. First when I upload the build, it asks me for a code and then in order to sign into the steamworks page it asks me for another one so you're telling me this is a third step? That is obnoxiously outrageous

bruh, prepaid sim-cards exist :lunar2019coolpig:

Get one for 5 bucks and you are fine. (you may need to add some cash every 1.5 years or so though, to net let it be disabled.)

"bruh", you're assuming the world consists only of your country, whatever it is. Not every country has prepaid SIM cards at all. And even if they do, in mine for example, they don't cost only 5 bucks to get, they expire in 2 months only, and the minium amount you're able to add to extend the expiration is at least 10 bucks each time, because our telecom companies are a cartel and do whatever they want. I have been using prepaids exclusively for the past 20+ years, I know.

Valve, terrible, terrible decision. Phone coverage is unreliable in LOTS of places, SMS is awfully insecure. It's a downgrade, it only adds friction.

Implement a proper TOTP solution, at last... People been asking for ages.

OK, sorry, didn't read this before, I somehow skipped the last page of comments. I'd like to add that what I wrote is in Europe, and in the EU even. We got free roaming across Europe because of EU laws, but the telecoms still do whatever they want inside the country. It used to be better, for example prepaids expired at 2 years a couple decades ago, but everything is gradually degrading over time.

oof 😢 I have no cell phone coverage where I live so this is going to be fun - SMS takes 1-2 hours to come through when I occasionally pick up a bar, if I go outside far enough.

And I live in the UK. Can't imagine other countries...

Hopefully they'll add a Steamguard option via email too.

I am curious about why the Steam dev team chose to implement SMS authentication, or at least what the major reasons were for this decision.

为什么一定要这么做?
Cheeseness Oct 10, 2023 @ 7:29pm
SMS/mobile phone requirement is a dealbreaker for me.
