Java MoO - Goes to sleep
Because there is no such thing as too much of a good thing..

It's a MoO remake that looks promising... The field is getting a bit crowded.

Interesting. Trying to re-engineer and copy the behaviors of another game is no easy feat. Copying game elements, sure, since those are usually laid out in the rules, but the little details can be hard to pin down. The redone art looks quite impressive.

Lol insane , so many projects after decades of nothing. But it makes me happy:)

I hope it's not a violation of forum protocol to bump this thread, but hopefully this is as good of a place as any to answer any questions or participate in any discussions about Java MOO. -- Ray

Not at all. Better a bump then 6 identical threads.

One of the questions in the Q&A asked about any "twists" planned. I said yes, but didn't elaborate. I'll provide an example now.

Please note this will not affect the base MOO1 "Orion" or "Antares" rulesets.

Problem - Darlok espionage does not work against players, because players have meta information about their racial abilities. When a Darlok steals tech from an AI and blames another AI, the deception works. But when a Darlok steals from a player and blames an AI, the player assumes it was the Darloks and the deception fails. In fact, the Darloks will generally be blamed for all espionage activities whenever their presence is known. This is exactly the opposite purpose of their racial ability!

Planned Change - Darloks will actually be, you know, shapechangers. This means that you will not know which of the AI races, if any, are Darloks. When the Darloks spawn, they will assume the visuals, dialog, homeworld name and ship graphics of some other race that is not playing.

This means that you may unwittingly trust and form an alliance with the Alkari, only for them to betray and backstab you at the end, revealing themselves to actually be the shapechanging Darloks. This should increase your paranoia of the Darlok presence in subsequent games, which is the whole point of them being a spy race.

Nice twist right there.

Whoa. That's pretty awesome.

That sounds awesome! Truly a great idea and a bit of a surprise that no one has ever thought of that before....

Sounds really cool, Ray!

That twist makes exterminating their species all down to the last remaining person all the more fun. It also means you could really hate a race and then start exterminating them only to find out they were Darloks.... and then you resume exterminating them.

Though I should wonder though, what if all the races are in the game? What will the Darloks appear as? If they appeared as a duplicate than the player would know near immediately to start killing asap.

That's splendid! :D

For this to work, you could never have more than "all minus one" races in the game. That's not a particularly restrictive condition.

You could also go the route a lot of games (including MoO 3) went and make it possible to have multiple empires of the same species. Although that has some pretty specific prerequisites on the worldbuilding side of things.

Seems a lot harder to justify that, lore-wise.

I could never get into Moo1 becaues of the dated UI so I'm looking foward to giving this a run.
