STEAM bans AI games
Forbes:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/06/29/steam-is-reportedly-rejecting-games-using-ai-art/?sh=31090f1a2a7e

steam response:
https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/03/valve-responds-to-claims-it-has-banned-ai-generated-games-from-steam/

Basically, since AI developed assets are in a law "grey zone", and no one REALLY knows who owns what, how copied it was and what % is allowed to look similar, Steam, in fear of their wallets and BIG MONEY$, just straight up banned AI developed games.

In 2 years Steam will cease to exist if they don't reverse.

Of course, we all are waiting for the supreme court in USA (and really, in every country) to rule on this copyright issue re: AI.

Oh, and these are the type of hip and young people who will be deciding on this cutting edge high tech:

Sorry, can't resist.

Our elites who rule over us, who decide on all matters affecting us, including AI:

it is just a setback.... ai games are incoming. There is the modAI project that is looking at a way to auto edit a game into a mod based on fourm posts on steam. So all the fan input gets outputted as a mod automatically

Dose this mean galciv4 will be in trouble as it has the Ai image and civilisation generator?

Steam should ban the human sh1t games instead.
Vazilii Sep 9, 2023 @ 11:38am
I do prefer human sh1t games in between the good ones, over AI taking over though. But hey, it's no doubt going to happen anyway sooner or later.

that is a very good question.
I believe galciv 4 uses AI to draw new races, right?
then yes, trouble.

I don't. I play War in the Pacific Admiral's Ediiton. Playing with a human, sending each other a turn per day, the game take s about 2-4 years.

With an AI opponent who will give me a challenge (unlike what is called 'AI' now, basically scripting), I could play a whole campaign of WITPAE in a few weeks or at most a few months, at my leisure.
The general consensus in favor of the video game paradigm being that of art's endeavor rather than that of entertainment seem antithetical to any kindness to artificial ingress into development. Agnosticism to the contention is consistent, but human observation concretized through toil has historically been so intrinsic to art as to be presupposed in justifications for copyright protection. See Venice, English response and the US Constitution. Antipathy to legal considerations is irrelevant as such were merely collateral to understandings of distinctions reserved for art rather than other modes of communication. This cultural understanding ought be resolved prior to rash decisions.

Lol, yea, his thoughts are too deep for this early in the morning for me to even try to comprehend.

I don't see how AI content could be ever copyrighted. I meant do the copyright goes to anyone who first used prompt X on version Y of algorithm Z? Or do all AI content goes to the creator of the AI algorithm and then they lease/sell those copyrights to certain prompts? Or do they sell seeds "You get copyright to all content created by using seed 54324523211 using any prompt on our v1.23.5b algorithm"?

Anyway, I don't see why you should get "elven warrior" copyrighted just because you typed it a few days before I did and we both used it in our games. Suing me over this would be ridiculous...

Very interesting. Isn't this just about art and voice? Doesn't Gal Civ 4 use AI art?

it gets better.

Right now, the way picture generating AI's work, is that with the same prompt, you WILL get different pictures EACH TIME YOU DO IT.

This is Valve's response in full:

We are continuing to learn about AI, the ways it can be used in game development, and how to factor it in to our process for reviewing games submitted for distribution on Steam. Our priority, as always, is to try to ship as many of the titles we receive as we can. The introduction of AI can sometimes make it harder to show a developer has sufficient rights in using AI to create assets, including images, text, and music. In particular, there is some legal uncertainty relating to data used to train AI models. It is the developer’s responsibility to make sure they have the appropriate rights to ship their game.

We know it is a constantly evolving tech, and our goal is not to discourage the use of it on Steam; instead, we’re working through how to integrate it into our already-existing review policies. Stated plainly, our review process is a reflection of current copyright law and policies, not an added layer of our opinion. As these laws and policies evolve over time, so will our process.

We welcome and encourage innovation, and AI technology is bound to create new and exciting experiences in gaming. While developers can use these AI technologies in their work with appropriate commercial licenses, they cannot infringe on existing copyrights.

Lastly, while App-submission credits are usually non-refundable, we’re more than happy to offer them in these cases as we continue to work on our review process.

For GalCiv IV the image AI was trained using material produced by artists employed by Stardock, so all the rights belong to the company.
