Unfortunately you'll find many spots (and it isn't unique to this idle game) where only the 'right' path lets you progress.

I have the same problem on Arch with Plasma. Clearing download cache fixed it and I was able to download again until I reset my PC and it wouldn't download again. I'd rather not clear the cache every time my machine resets, so opting out out of the beta till this is patched.

If it helps with diagnostics - I checked and couldn't find any firewall logs where it was blocked. I also noticed that with Steam in the background the webhelper process was maintaining a small (<2kb) download connection but that didn't seem to be contributing to game downloads.
