SteamOS Download
I am looking to turn my PC into a steam machine running steam os. The download links for SteamOS only provide an image for steam deck recovery. IS there any way to get SteamOS for desktop?

SteamOS 3.0 isn't yet ready for prime time. It's good enough for the very specific hardware configuration of the Steam Deck, but they're still working on more general support for a wider range of hardware configs.

They will do a full release with an iso you can happily boot and run, just not yet.

That hasn't stopped some people from making it work anyway though.

That is an unofficial version of SteamOS 3.0 called HoloISO. It's mostly there, but it's mainly a curiosity and not really intended to seriously be used as your main OS right now.

You can try HoloISO, you can wait for the official full release of SteamOS 3.0, or you can download any other wonderfully feature complete version of Linux. Then just install Steam and set it to boot directly into the new Big Picture mode, which is based on the Steam Deck interface.

Great stuff, thanks all
Yeah it would probably be better to just install whatever flavor of LInux you want and then run steam on top of it rather than using SteamOS

Though at that point why not just make a Windows system that boots into BPM. You're not really gaining much by going to Linux unless you really want to do that and deal with all the various head aches around games not working

atm this is old SteamOS 2 based on debian.
SteamOS 3 (codename holo) is based on arch (and not officially released yet)

@OP: if you still wanna use the PC for productivity or other tasks than gaming revolving around Steam, i would recommend to install a more established Linux distro. while it is not impossible to do that with SteamOS, certain things are way less complicated to get running properly.
@Satoru yes I came to the same conclusion. I have Steam running in big picture mode on bootup so it provides a console like experience now. Thanks

Good luck with your build
It's been a while... Any updates?

Install Manjaro, install Steam.
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
