Kickstarter & Banned & Rule Consistency
So I got banned for a week for posting to my 'Isle of Man Laser Scan' Kickstarter project, for 'advertising'

I've found about a dozen similar posts and threads, i.e specifically about kickstarters, and these are still up.

So what exactly are the rules, or do mods make them up as they go along?

They have been reported, it was the first thing I did after getting banned for 'advertising'. Still there.

Developers mod their own forums the way they want.

The rules are still the rules though right?

'No advertising' doesn't only apply to the off-topic section.

They can moderate as they see fit.

I guess I'd better take you at your word SpunkyJones, that the rules are made up on the spot. Does this apply to non-dev sections of the Steam Community Discussion pages?

Or do the mods in those sections, these sections, have an obligation to enforce the rules as written?

Also, since this project is related to gaming but is not a commercial product, and isn't related to any other commercial product, don't you think that on this occasion the label 'advertising', is a little too restrictive?

Applied in the way it has been, the only way to discuss my entirely relevant project, is through the ridiculously oblique method I've had to employ here.

And here are some links to definitely infringing, and definitely flagged posts, which are still up, showing that mods 'moderate as they see fit', even in the non-dev sections:

None of those are advertising, and only the first one is breaking the rules, and it has only been up for an hour.

My OP was up for about 2 mins, maximum. And yes, each of the rest are advertising. And certainly more advertising than my OP.

You seem to have a strange definition of what advertising is if you think that answering the question in the OP is "advertising". But I get that you don't actually think that, you're just mad that you were punished for breaking the rules. It's ok. When you get older you'll come to accept that not everything revolves around you.

these rules are for everything that is under full control by Valve and you can expect that you get banned for advertising for sure.

the over 8000 discussion boards for each game however should be moderated by their developers. some devs are bad at moderating or dont even moderate at all but that doesn't make it legit to post adverts in those places. sometimes steam mods will clean up a gameboard.

also the greenlight pages posting links to their own kickstarter projects are completely legit. the greenlight site admin even provides kickstarter implementation as you can see here on the righthand side as example:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=179481010
they are advertising for their own stuff on their own paid part of steam. greenlight submission fee is $100.

do you have a greenlight page? no? then you are legitamately not allowed to post any form of advertising for your game anywhere.

all examples you provides are either content related and legit or badly moderated by gamedevs. rules are not made up on the spot, you simply shoved your garbage in a place where people dont want it and actually cared about the rules and it got reported.

and you really had to dig out threads and comments where people ask for game recommendations and normal users replied to it with game names? rly? you should look for other sad excused then this.

@Fairo - Older? I take it you think I'm a pre-teen. I'm about the same age as Steve McQueen was when the photo in my avatar was taken.

Like I said, those linked posts are more advertising than my OP. I just linked to my project and similar threads on other forums, and asked for people's opinions.

@wuddih - I've 'dug up' threads relevant to the point I'm making. These posts are extolling the virtues of the commercial products they name = Literally Advertising.

I'm sorry. I'm a little tired and stressed right now, and I shouldn't have made those comments. Thank you for being civil even through that.

You're right that those posts are technically advertising, in that they are encouraging users to purchase those games. However, there is a difference between when a poster asks for game suggestions, and posting something unsolicited.

However, I think we should hold off on speculation until a moderator clarifies this, as I think that would be the best way forward.
