April had Rocket League. It doesn't happen every weekend or even most weekends.
Not that long ago. Last free weekend was in June. http://store.steampowered.com/news/22402/
There was also a fairly sizable amount of time where Payday 2 was having a free play event over the Summer Sale.
Please provide data for 'more' often. Note "I think so" is not actual data
last weekend and currently still running for the next two hours a game named Atlas Reactor was/is play for free.
and you know that the games are just available to play for you that specific weekend, right? you do not keep those games.
to clarify, "Steam" does not decide those free weekends, the publisher/developer of the game does.
Humble Bundle do free weekends now too! They did Civ: Beyond Earth last weekend.

This is probably why he thinks there used to be more free weekends in the past. They used to show up in the library automatically, but so many people complained about the "unwanted game" showing up that they stopped doing it.
I compleltly forgot about the free game weeekend things.
