"Offensive" name
So steam recently started to censor my name on my profile.. Im using my nickname for very long time..

Nickname is kinda from "german" surname Fuxius.. ---> Fuxis

What can be done so it wont censor my nickname? This is nonsense...
I love the 'adapt or die' philosophy being touted. It assumes that successful survival of a species is to simply accept circumstances as they are and not fight against them. However, more often than not, 'adapting' means fighting. It means finding ways to 'game' the 'system' of reality. Ways to bend it to your benefit, to exploit it, to get around it.
If species operated on the premise of 'you can't change the rules, so accept them and stop trying to find ways around them' they would simply die.
Birds exploited the laws of aerodynamics by developing hollow bones, aerodynamic profiles, appendages suited for creating lift, etc. because the way things were weren't working. Adapt or die, in this sense, isn't simply rolling over to your current circumstances but instead finding a way to use the nature of reality in order to change your circumstances.

So far all of you 'adapt or die' ppl, be honest, what you mean is shut up, get in line, and don't strive to make your circumstances better. Just follow the 'law', report slaves and Jews, show your papers, don't toss tea in the bay, don't stand up and say 'I don't agree with this.'

Okay, perhaps I took it a bit too far into the political realm, but you get my point. It's not adapting to simply accept your circumstances. It's rolling over. It's cowing to what you perceive to be an insurmountable hurdle. And it's why you guys spend enough time on Steam forums to know about the popular responses to those who have a complaint about a policy. Because you'd rather keep your head down and stuck in a monitor and tell others to do the same than to meet life on your terms.

Again, perhaps too dramatic. And insulting. But seriously. This is a legitimate gripe. They give us the option to turn on or off the language filtering for a reason. So we can choose what we do and don't see and they aren't tasked with moderating and dictating social morality and decorum.

Further, if as the op says, it is derivative of a non-English language, how is it that no one feels that might be a teensy, dare I say it and risk being called an SJW libtard... <.< >.>, ♥♥♥♥ it, Eurocentric, to assume that anything that might seem to be 'offensive' to an English speaker is, therefore offensive even if it is a relatively benign word of foreign origins?
This happens all the time on a number of platforms that claim to be progressive and sensitive to what amounts to intersectional politics, but is, as it usually is with such sensitivities, a weird self-loathing method of being a bigoted ass but with all the moral grandstanding that comes with being a 'champion of the disenfranchised'.

Steam sells us some of the most grotesque, offensive, and apalling content the world has seen, yet wants to globally sensor 'offensive' names that, so far as I'm aware, are not insulting or otherwise diminishing any 'protected' groups? Don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ roll over. That's how you get Facebook and Portland circa 2020. Speak up and tell them what you think and encourage them to meet your expectations if they expect to continue being the 'premier' 3rd party gaming distributor.

Matt and Wolf Knight offered some alternatives, I think your best bet is to contact Steam Support to see what they'll do or don't do.

Everyone else will give opinions and nitpick semantics.

Your best bet is contact Steam Support.
They can answer your question(s) and possibly resolve this name issue.

How do I contact Steam Support?

pick a name that is not censored

Which is a stupid advise if you name is not offensive but only censored because they've gone Gung-Ho with the filter.

Maybe Steam should just give us a list of names that we can choose from.

You can try using special character text.
I used a site with a great text generator but I can't remember the website name.

Currently my favorite is LingoJam :-)

Fancy Text Generator (𝓬𝓸𝓹𝔂 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝓹𝓪𝓼𝓽𝓮)
https://lingojam.com/FancyTextGenerator

Special Text Generator (𝖈𝖔𝖕𝖞 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝓅𝒶𝓈𝓉𝑒)

Thank you.

If they rejects it, I will try to bypass it.

Anyhow for now I do recommend you put it on the filter as never filter this words
May help over time if they search for stuff that were a little too fast to censor

Answer from steam support.

Hey thanks for writing in.

It sounds like you are having a problem with our newly introduced Text Filter. You can read more about how this feature works here, including information on how to edit your personal filter, or turn it off entirely.

We're still gathering feedback from the community and making changes, so I'll make sure that this is passed on to the development team.

I would also encourage you to share any opinions, suggestions, or ideas in the official Lab Discussions. Our development team is actively following these discussions.

Best Regards,
Chris

That didn't take long, and it's easy. Now I have both a safe name and avatar! :steamhappy: Until Andrew removes both bans again. I like ♥♥♥♥♥♥ OP it's what people don't see that they should be offended by. Like those private profiles. or blank character names. Why do people even do that? :steamfacepalm:

This is not the same issue that you are facing. You are pushing the boundaries of what is or is not acceptable for your profile. OP simply has a name that is being caught by the new filters.

You can disable (opt out of) the filter in your account preferences.

It no longer applies to names and the forums.

The text filtering feature applied to the forums on and off during its time in Steam Labs, but it was "shipped" as "Chat filtering", and the news post about it makes no mention of any plans to apply it elsewhere, just a vague "we continue to develop longer-term solutions in these spaces". Disappointing. Hope they come back to it.
