Anyone else sick of all the advertising of gambling sites in usernames?
I've been checking every instance of people doing this, that I run across on these forums. For like 99% of the instances of people advertising a link in their username, it's a gambling site of some sort.

And it's pretty obnoxious; they simply have to post in the forum once and now whatever sites there are in their name are now being advertised on the forum.

Some are even more blatant -- advertising MULTIPLE sites in one username, for example.

Anyone else sick of this practice? I wonder if I should report them on their profiles for advertising. Hopefully Valve can do something about this?

Yup, definitely sick of it.
there is nothing against a user putting a site in their name.

it is annoying but reporting them would be pointless.

One of the choices for reason for reporting a profile is "Spamming Advertisements/Links". Now, stuff like fandoms, clantags, etc., those are perfectly fine and normal, but then you get sites that literally tell you that you get more betting credits for putting their site name in your username.

but that is for spamming them in comments and posts, not in their names.

a mod should come by soon to clarify.

Well, that's convenient; I could call myself "Quint clickhereforascamsite.com" and then continue to browse Steam normally and show up in group chat rooms and post on forums and so now I'm not advertising clickhereforascamsite.com in my posts so I'm in the clear!

...well, there's clearly something wrong with that.

Besides, this isn't a thing that forum mods can deal with. Forum mods only have jurisdiction over forum posts; we'd need whole-Steam admins who actually have jurisdiction over userpages.
they report things directly to valve employees and have things taken care of.

have you noticed the users that posted in the forums that were community banned? they were reported by the mods and it was taken care of.

there are no steam admins. there are mods and there are valve employees.

Actually there is. The community rules and guidelines.
These guidelines apply to all places in the Steam Store and Community where users can post content. This includes, but is not limited to, discussions, comments, guides, product reviews, screenshots, artwork, videos, tags, Steam Workshop, and Steam Greenlight.

You can definitely post content on your profile. For porn or hate crime related stuff the rules are enforced. Just not for advertising.
If the site in question is blocked by the filter when you quote them, then it has no place in the name either.

It's sadly just part of Valve's typical ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. They take hatchet approachs to problems that need surgical improvements (reviews) and do the bare minimum to get their hands clean for the real stuff - gambling.

A sad side-effect of the whole gambling issue is that it fuels the economy which Valve profits from. Instead of overhauling the system to give less incentive for scamming we got ... gloves.
Yes, it's getting old, would be great if Valve put a stop to it.
At least most the time it's easy to press the ignore or block button when those people add me as most of them I have no intrest in.

If usernames would be affected by the word filter, it would solve a lot of the problems.

Steam already prohibits people from spelling out "Steam", "Valve", "admin", etc. in their usernames. unfortunately, gambling sites tend to not have a constant filterable bit.
