I’m realistically optimistic about how horrible everything is.

Well there's no such thing as realism. People just tell you they're a realist in self-defense when you point out that they're a pessimist.

I think they all have their place, contextually. Optimism will give you hope and a reason to pursue something. Realism will let you examine things as they are and make the right decisions. Pessimism is the most dangerous, but being wary of the world and understanding when to take it seriously is valuable.

Being a realist comes with pessimism, but that doesn't mean that you can't be optimistic as a realist.

I used to be optimistic when I bought a pack of cigarettes then the reality hit that they cost money I could have spent on something better, then I became pessimistic about my free spending ways.

The optimist only wishes to be a realist while the pessimist think they are.

Ah, so you're a pessimist then.

Optimism is best. Optimism is positive. Positive doesn't inhibit brain activity like negative thoughts do. To approach things pessimistically one has to consider negative outcomes. Negative thoughts degenerate the brain functions, and use inferior neuron pathways, inhibit brain improvements, restrict brain memory and learning.

With any meta programming, the best choice is a balance, these are tools to use not religions.
Balance optimism, realism, and pessimism when it makes sense when using primarily optimism.

i could realistically use pessimism in an optimistic fashion. you wouldn't think it possible but you can, because sometimes there is something so much worse out there and you have the less of two evils to deal with, and at least you aren't a completely hopeless cause.

yes, facing the possibility in a survival situation can i get food the answer is immediately no.
then apply thought and can weigh it up on probability of getting food and how to go about it becomes the process towards optimism without insanity.

even with a small chance, it's still a chance, it doesn't mean it's hopeless. eventually you'll find something after a little effort, thereby going through three thought processes together which ordinarily are opposite to each other.

Yes, self-defense because I pointed out you're a pessimist.

Definitely a healthy mix of optimism and realism, with a little more of the prior.

I don't search for problems, they find me. That makes me a realist. And I hope very few problems find out where I am, which makes me an optimist.
