.png Avatar files.
It was to my understanding that avatars were limited to JPEG format to save space on Steam's servers, but ever since Artwork uploading became a thing, you can upload full sized PNG files.

So I figured maybe we could finally have PNG files as avatars, rather than Steam converting uploaded avatars to JPEG. Avatars can only be 184x184, so it's not like it'll be anywhere near as large as an artwork upload.

Discuss below.

Try counting once how many Profiles you visit a day, and how many Profile Images you see a day :D:

Why is this relevant? I visit many profile a day, almost all with artwork showcases, with .png images in them.

As I said, anyone can upload .png images and showcase them, so as long as we can do that, there's no issue with having .png avatars.

My argument is, if anyone here can show a big .png image, what's so bad about having a little one in the avatar box?
maybe you overread my previous comment with animated pngs.

avatars are small and can come from a wide range of sources and there are animated png collections of avatars, these wont work on steam since it uses chromium as browser and that doesnt support it. and again, it would confuse people, also .. smaller pictures have other handling of copyright protection, I don't wanted to bring up that topic since it is complex.

http://i.imgur.com/n75Ycxu.png test this in firefox, will animate or chrome(steamoverlay), wont animate. this is a real png file.

The point i try to make is you see a crazy more amount of Profile Avatars compared to Artwork
Even on the user Profile you get a few profile images (for most i assume) as they have friend list + Groups + Comments

Then you also have the chat, and store that you have reviews abut a game + Community Discussions that has profile images

You get to see it much more then the art work, then the Art work may be big, but its some what rare to see, compare to the Profile Images that you see all the time

And just to give some perspective abut internet speed and how its effected by something small as profile images
When i use my 3G to connect to the internet on my phone, to the PC, i can almost not load the JPG profile images that are on Steam, but i can, even that it takes a while, now how you think that will be when someone has to load bigger images from a png?

Not all avatar images need to be .png, it would seem pretty moot to use it on the smaller pictures that show in chats and friends lists, etc.

I'd quite like for the profile image on a persons actual profile page to be able to be .png.

From what I can tell, only Firefox animates it, I've not tested on that browser since I don't use it, but Chrome and Internet Explorer show a still image.

Again, is the built in browser for Steam is Chrome based, there's no worry about having animated avatars. Animated avatars would be bad.

i will not explain anything anymore, png allows to much crap in pictures that are not necessary for this size of picture, animation is just the most noticable one, transparency is another. was requested since steamcommunity was introduced, you are just a copycat of this suggestion, multiple times declined. wont happen.

Being insulting doesn't help push your point across. I think this is a perfectly viable idea, but you obviously think otherwise. You've shown that so I see no need for you to continue arguing, especially when you're going to insult me.

JPEG files are compressed heavily and introduce visual artefacts and blurring to the picture. Take a picture in PNG and convert it to JPEG, then look closely at both.

Not always the case. When saving a JPG in GIMP for example, you can use things like 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling, Floating Point DCT Method along with 100% JPG Quality. You'll find out that the quality is actually a heck of a lot more comparable.

Steam screenshots and images default to 4:2:0 Chroma Subsampling, Fast Interger DCT Method and 90% Quality. But if the Chroma Subsampling was to be changed to 4:4:4 for JPG's alone, you will notice a HUGE quality improvement.

Steam however, does not like 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling for JPG Images. Even if you upload a PNG, Steam will automatically convert the picture to a JPG using the settings listed above. But PNG Images uploaded to Guides aren't touched for some reason.

random ignorant bullpoop
when did "copycat" did turn into an offensive word ... png for avatars has been around since 2009 when steamcommunity was released, mostly for the reason that in the early days they used a much heavier jpeg compression, they changed that to less compression and officially declined png.

Sarcastically offensive stuff

Again, you obviously disagree with my suggestion, and you voiced such. You gave your own points which I blatantly disagreed with. We're done here, you don't need to keep trying to force your opinion on me, it's ignorant and rude.
