If you don't want friends to join groups just because you're in it, then tell them. Or reconsider your friendship with them.
Why even care about Groups when you opted to disclose everything and more in your free text showcase anyway? On a PUBLIC profile.
2) If I tell them, it'll make them more likely to join, just like real life.
3) Me, some steam friends, almost all irl friends, my dad, and my brothers.
So you don't want friends who share the same interests as you.. to join the same groups as you... remind me... why do you have these people as friends then?
For example and this is only an example as something that can be a controversial topic. Furries for example. It may be a very common thing. But some people can be quite mean about such things and you prefer not to leave it open to everyone to see.
Some things you rather have a group to talk about with, but keep away from others for your own sanity's sake. This doesn't mean people will join such a group just to troll them... They can be banned from the group by someone who is a mod in the group (I forget if groups can actually kick users and ban them from seeing it or not... I forget, if it doesn't then ignore that last bit)
Also, I think you should be able to have your games private, since this guy keeps following me on all games we both own..
Point taken... but regardless if you own the same game as a friuend they are going to see it regardless of your privacy settings.
Now see. that's were there's cross ver. Steam will always display that data. Because technically they're not getting the data from your profile, They're pulling it from their database.
No, that's no reason. If you don't want it to be known to Steam friends, than don't put it up on Steam. The same has been true for every other social network site since friendster: If you think a group is damaging to your reputation, don't join it.
It's 2015, whatever you like, you will find a forum for it somewhere on the net full of likeminded people. If you have IRL friends or met someone with the same liking somewhere else, they can join up there with you to discuss it.
So, if a theoretical 14-year-old weaboo furry who is obsessed with Gary's Mod doesn't want people who he met in this game to know about his sexual fetishes (wait, 14yo do already have fetishes?), then he simply shouldn't have any references to it on his profile.
Likewise he shouldn't put up a link to his Steam profile on a furry forum profile if he doesn't want to know his fellow furries about him enjoying Gary's Mod.
Likewise he might not refer to either of it on his facebook profile which is frequented by family, completely different friends or even strangers who he met on unrelated occasion, like a block party where he got drunk (okay, forget the 14yo part now :P )
And he should not put any of the above in his future LinkedIn profile.
"Seperation of Concerns" - also applicable in Real Life.
It may be better to maintain 2 separate accounts. One that is used publicly (the one you use currently), that people associate and recognize as you, and which you feel represents you. The other account could be used to purchase games, join groups, share views, etc, which you feel may not be accepted / viewed in a different light, to your public image.
