Captcha instead of "too many activation attempts"
Hello. I play a lot of indie games and I purchase a lot of game bundles such as humble bundle, indie gala and indie royal.
So needless to say that I always see this "too many activation attempts" message because I have some games already, and steam will for some reason register that as unsuccessful activation.
Now I have to wait forever before I can continue activating games.
I understand why this system exists. It's so that bots can't just go through every letter and number and register whatever game comes up.
But you need to fix this problem and find a better solution, because I for one am sick and tired of it.
So how about implementing captcha instead?
Or how about type in your password every 10th unsuccessful code?
Second thought. That'd actually work better than captcha, because the captcha system doesn't work for blind people.
But this is really something that needs to be fixed.

I buy indie bundles, too. Many of them...and I never (!!!) had such a message. If you use copy + paste, you wouldn't have the problem. Think about the steam system. With captchas it would be unfair for people who got problems with them, like written here: http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/captcha.php

If you double click a key on the indie site, then only the key is marked, instead of the spaces at the front or back of the key. So copy and paste should work easy. Changing the system in steam would invite (wannabe) hackers to use automated systems for key fishing (trying to activate random keys, just to get games, that they actually don't own). I think the system should stay as it is.

CAPTCHA has been broken a long time ago by bot makers. they tried CAPTCHAs here a little while back and within a week they removed them because thats how fast bots were reprogrammed to bypass it. Only the humans had issues with it.

Just google CAPTCHAs broken. https://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=captchas+broken&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&gws_rd=ssl

Heck just use the search in steam discussion area and look for CAPTCHA and you will see others asking for CAPTCHAs and others saying same thing I'm saying that its broken already.

I'm also pretty sure not too many blind people are playing games on steam, so I don't think thats a big issue. I could be wrong, but seeing as how its mostly a gaming platform and most games are of a visual nature, I just don't see most actual blind people playing them.

Sure, but the article is not only about blind people. There are more disabilites, that make it hard for people to get past that captchas. In Australia there was a campaign against captchas, where people with disabilites had problems with the systems. Still this people were able to see.

Captchas are outdated. There are many posibilites to get a secure system. And what steam uses is more than enough.

People who don't have any disabilities have issues with CAPTCHAs too. There has been a few times when I tried 5 or 6 times to get past a CAPTCHA because it was so messed up on the screen, or I typed everything in correctly but for what ever reason it didn't accept it. I specifically mentioned blind people because its a gaming platform and I really don't see people who are blind playing visual based games which is most, if not all, of the games that are on steam.

To the OP, having to type in a password would be just as bad as having to put in a CAPTCHA, bots would be by passing it and thats mainly what the waiting feature is for, to stop bots.

Yea maybe captcha is a bad solution.
But something needs to be done.
It's very annoying. WIth most bundles I can just copy / paste. But when they come in paper or scanned image, it's not that simple. And like I said, if I already have the game and I paste the new code in there, steam will tell me that the game is already owned. But that counts as an unsuccessful activation. And then after a few of those, the "too many attempts" message will pop up.
wuddih 2015 年 5 月 24 日 上午 7:47
*cough*
never had any problems with that and with too many activations.

If you are getting them from a bundle, then look before you try to activate, that will cut down on the unsuccessful activations. It doesn't take long to do that. Just slow down and don't try to put in 10 or 15 at a time.

Thats how you solve this issue.

They are not going to change it because removing that means people who create bots can have the bots just go through a made up list of keys to activate a bunch of them which would really mess with all the places that get steam keys to give out with bundles or when you buy something from a store.

It happened to me again actually (twice today).
Guess it's my fault for partaking in steam giveaways, but still. This is ridiculously annoying and NEEDS to be fixed.
@Gwarsbane To answer your question. not necessarily bundles. Like this time I tried some giveaway codes that were posted. And now I am certainly not going to win because steam decided it'd be a good idea to limit how many bad keys I can try.

so you basically complain about not getting free stuff, because someone else takes it away because you have nothing else to do then check the internet the whole day for free ♥♥♥♥ and try out a massive amount of keys?

i believe the limit is 15 per hour and that is imo already very excessive. i would even suggest to lower that limit. i only ran into it once, when i bought 6 bundles on the same day.
Don Coyote 2015 年 5 月 24 日 下午 2:23
I'm "complaining" about not being able to paste codes because steam registers already owned games as a unsuccessful attempt. This happens a lot because some of the bundles have games that are already on my account. It's just frustrating.
Having that limit there is such a pain.
And why in the world would you want to lower that limit?
Then people would only end up downloading their games directly instead of using steam for their bundles.
I can maybe accept this limit if Valve would be able to make some sort of deal with these bundle websites to exclude the limitation from these particular games or steam keys given to their websites.

so you are complaining about not being able to activate 360 games per day? oh sorry ... trying to activate 360 keys per day.

people = keyninjas, bots and other lowlifes. 15 activations per hour covers nearly every bundle and even if you buy more, you cannot play 15 games in an hour, so there is no even a reason to download them from other sources just because you get blocked on steam for entering keys ...

it makes absolutely no sense to lift or raise that limit because that would only support keyninjas, bots and other lowlifes.

the normal user the a.k.a the 99.9% will never run into this limit.
Gwarsbane 2015 年 5 月 24 日 下午 2:52
You are going to have to accept the limit because the bundle sites have no say in something like this. They get their keys from the game makers.

Valve has had this limit for a long time, even before bundles were around, because its like I explained it in a previous post, its easy enough to make a bot that puts in a new code every time an error message comes up and its easy enough to generate a list of serial numbers for the bots to keep trying.

Learn not to be so greedy, trying to put in as many keys as you can, more then likely for games you don't even want to play after all you don't seem to be checking the name of them against what you already have.

Learn to check what games you already have before putting in a key.

TL;DR version is, its to stop bots from activating all the keys before they can actually be used by people. Don't like it, tough, not going to change.

Just to make it clear to you. -, - and any other KEY selling site are not indie bundle sites. They are sites, where 3rd persons sell their keys for money. Steam does not support this sites at any way. If you get a "already owned" message, then SOMEONE ELSE activated the key and you got screwed! That happens a lot at this kind of sites, since the site owners give a crap about your problems. So do not buy from sites, where you get scanned / paper keys. Indie sites are: indiegala.com, indieroyale.com, bundlestars.com, humblebundle.com, groupees.com, flyingbundle.com ... I don't know any else. Sites like kinguin.net (.com), {链接已删除} and so on are most likely faked sites, where any kind of private sellers can sell their stuff. There are no secure measures. Buying on this kind of sites happens at your own risk! Steam even bans for that kind of sites. So do not buy there!

EDIT: As you can see...the site names are censored on steam. Steam hates this sites, since they get massive support requests, where people complain about getting screwed by this sites. So stop using them!

Yea I see that. It's just frustrating.
So the best solution would be having 10 per hour and Password + "Are you a robot" or something per activation after those 10.
Because bots can still bypass that time limit by freezing or resetting the time using Cheat Engine or similar. You can also use Linux and install the Windows version of Steam via PlayOnLinux and freeze the time from regedit in that particular Wine bottle.
You know.
So if bots really is the reason behind the 15 per hour limit, they should really consider updating that security.

Read my post!

Edit: Using keys from other people has a big risk for your account. You can get access to an account, if you give the steam support a username and a key, that is activated on this account. So if you use a key on your account, it could happen, that someone tries to get access to it through steam. You really should stop doing stuff like that.

Edit 2:
I hope steam does NOT change anything on the key activation system. The overload on this kind of attempts are high enough right now. It is unnecessary to make more overload to the servers, because there are people, who try to activated random posted keys on "giveaway" sites.
