Now is the perfect time for Valve to bring a replacement for Discord
Discord is going public, the new CEO is a money hungry grub with a bad track record and we already see, that bad faith monetisation is increasing.

Valve released Steam many years ago for free. When will it bring us a gaming/social platform for voice chat and community building?

If they do it now, they can dismantle the whole competition, by just listening to the community and give them what they want

What's wrong with the existing discord competition?

A. Why does Valve care what Discord is doing, or why that bothers you?

B. See: Non Sequitur

C. Being able to imagine something doesn't make it true. Or do you have anything to support your claims?

Does it not have these already?

Steam Voice chat: Yep, still there.
Steam Groups: Yep, still there.
Steam Discussions: Yep, still there.

Steam has had such features long before Discord existed. It has been a gaming and social platform for just as long too.
I'm looking forward to the last decade of open source development and support vanishing in the blink of an eye because so many people relied on discord as a replacement for proper repositories.

I don't see much value in expecting ANOTHER corporation to bail you out of that problem.

Personally I'd be glad if Discord disappeared.

It might be one service for almost all communication needs, but it is stupidly fractured - either you join dozens of groups and get overwhelmed by notifications or you are missing out on conversation about the topic as a whole with little chance to update yourself. Because it is completely trashing internet archival. You have a tech- or game-related question? Go to discord. Let yourself get chewed out because you are the umpteenth guy who asked it. Yet how are you supposed to find any information if there is no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ record of it to be found?
