Don't know of any alternative services though.
Google, who can put 10 times the amount of people onto 1 project than Valve has total people can't even get translate to fully work right all the time. There are times I get lots of gibberish out of it and they are a company dedicated to information tech, Valve is not.
I also don't want the extra bloat, I can always copy and paste into google translate if I really need it.
wow guys...DEFINITELY MUCH less useful than a OTHER PROJECTS
... in all honesty I was waiting for someone to propose this type of translation. Also because the implementation would be minimal, as a type of work BUT it would REALLY be very useful. And if someone prefers having to copy / paste, OK NO PROBLEM, but why not make things easier? Language is really VERY IMPORTANT and ENGLISH is not always a UNIVERSAL language FOR NOTHING.
The feature wouldn't be used because it would translate into gibberish more than half the time.
It's also not a realistic expectation for Valve to just invent a better translator.
That's why Steam offers a bunch of languages for their client made by human beings. There is no need to understand each and every forum post. And you do not want to understand people in game chat half of the time.
i have zero doubts that for certain languages the quality and update frequency would be much better, if they were done by professionals.

Google Translate does offer very good results ... when the original text is crisp af ... but how often does someone chat with someone else at a level that equals a formal letter to congress?
never.
for more degenerated written text it might be just enough to get a the context of the source.
anyway ... none of this matters ...
what this topic asks for will cost Valve money for nothing in return.
just because you can pay google with personal data, does not mean Valve can do that on a corporate scale.
https://cloud.google.com/translate/pricing
they have to pay money to implement the service here.
if other platforms are willing to pay or have a solution for this is not relevant.
the platforms you probably got the idea from ... the things you post and write on there is literally the first step for them to squeeze money out of you through advertising.
what you post here has zero value for Valve, Steam has no advertising.
