Increase the max file size for GIFs
With the new moving profile backgrounds, I would like to see more support when it comes to the file size limit for GIFs especially. They can be closer to 20MB when they fit the quality and frame rate of the background.

When converting down to lower frame rates to save space, the choppiness is apparent. An example is on my profile; my middle artwork picture is running at 12.5 fps, instead of 30, to abide by the 8MB upload limit.

Thank you all, I appreciate the updates to profiles and chat.
Cheers

I can understand your feelings, but there's probably some reasonable arguments against.

  1. Storage concerns, tripling storage needs has consequences.
  2. Bandwidth concerns, for both Steam and users. Does Steam want to be serving significantly more data in vanity gifs? Do users want to be subjected to that?
  3. Is there serious demand? Or are we talking 1% of users using this feature, or hungry for larger gifs?

At the very least these are some of the questions that need to be addressed and may be enough to keep the limit at 8MB for the time being.

No thank you. Lots of people still have issues with bandwidth and cant get something better and we don't need something taking up even more of it just because you want better looking animated gifs... how about... stop with the animated gifs.

A better alternative would be to support APNG.
Smaller file sizes for the same animation lengths.

Or even better: just drop that animation BS alltogether. Nobody needs a 4k 120 FPS sparkly render of their bloody name on their profile.
Now that Valve sells GIF's themselves on the point store I see no reason why 20 MB instead of 8 MB should be the end of the world as we know it.

Concerning storage space there was a similar discussion for screenshots. We had a measly 500 MB then and 20 GB now.:snail:

No thanks, rnd gifs is a pain as it is, remove the ability to use them and let people use what they can obtain from the pointshop would be better imo.

Steam's front page is 7-8 MB. It loads slow AF. No need to have the profiles slacking as well. And there are already many complains about the forced animated stuff. And we are not talking about the misuse of screenshots-/artwork showcases here.

Also the upload-limit is 8 MB. Steam will compress the image as will Akamai. The one on the profile page is 2-3 MB, which is already quite hefty for a freaking image.

If so, there should be an option to disable loading of profile backgrounds/prof-pics and other crap load of stuff.

"Lots of people still have issues with bandwidth" - there's no significant impact on bandwidth when there's a ton of stuff loaded anyway.

Stop spreading ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like this. I respect and understand the problem of bandwidth, but you don't care about these people. You care about liking the back door of Valve, they do not provide an option to disable GIFs (only in the friend list).

For example, my prof-poster GIF is one with a red line.

All others are prof/pics AND animated prof-pics from my friend list that I do not even SEE!

And this is just MY PROFILE, with +-2 friends with animated prof-pics.
