Valve is doing this instead...

What's next?

We’re already working on improvements to the Steam Chat app, including voice chat. With Steam Chat moving to its own dedicated app, the original Steam Mobile app will see significant upgrades focused on account security. Our plans include better Steam Guard options to help securely log into your Steam account, such as QR codes and one-touch login, and improved app navigation.

Steam Mobile App - The mobile app is getting a refresh to add more login types and help users secure their accounts.

You have a choice to either use it or to not use it.
YES please! It's all TOTP in the background. Please let me use my regular authenticator app.

This is not a problem unique to Steam but it is really irritating that some companies want to force their specific authenticator on people. There is Authy for Twitch, the Blizzard authenticator for Battle.net, the Steam Guard for Steam .... I refuse to install another authenticator app on my phone this is ridiculous. I want to use the one I chose to use for litterally every other service under the sun.

I know, however, I rarely use mobile to confirm trades/market listings

It's not relevant what you want with it, it's relevant what Valve wants to use the authenticator for.

maybe you don't know why do I have such need. I use 1password, and it can remember my password and automatically fill the Two-factor authentication without unlock mobile, finding steam , see the codes....

I never said anything against that. I only pointed out what Valve is doing instead.

At least if something happens to your 2-step authentication device, Steam can help you get your account back. They have for me already. If you used Google authenticator and say your phone gets lost or stolen, there goes your account for life.

there are already solutions for that. reset tokens for example. 2FA was not invented by valve. they are using the same algorithm everyone else is using. other comanies (github for example) are able to implement it in such a way that you can use your app of choice and even recover your account after a device failure. given that you take responsibility. we're not saying force this on every user, but users who know what an authenticator app is, what it does and which one they prefer should be given a choice. chuck it in advanced options to hide it from normal people for all I care.
Yes there should be alternatives and options but google guard, really?

Google is not Steam. This is like asking my employer to give me access to all the company data via my Neopets account.

No, it isn't like that at all. The TOTP method for 2FA is not unique to any company. Yes Google makes an authenticator app, so does Microsoft and tons of free and open source ones out there. The OP is a little misleading in that way. We are asking for support for Google Authenticator because if they support that one you can use whatever you like. I personally don't use Google Authenticator but it's an easy to recognize marketable name that people can get behind. Adding support for Google Authenticator would mean adding support for all general purpose authenticator apps.
