Esperanto as a possible listed language on Steam?
Hey! Please excuse this rather unusual request.

I would like Esperanto to be a possible language listed for games on Steam. Currently, even if a game does have an Esperanto translation, the creator(s) cannot indicate this on Steam because Esperanto is not listed as an option. I understand that it's not a common language for video game translations, but it does occur now and then. I myself did a complete translation for Slay the Spire, and I'd get some pleasure out of seeing it appear in the list for that game. I would like to be able to find other games by this language (or at least filter results of searches) the way you can for other languages such as French or Russian.

More generally, I think it would be good if all languages (within reason, perhaps? Something like any language with an ISO code?) could be listed... but I'm here just requesting my particular pet language.

Thanks!

None taken, I was expecting that reaction. In fact, thank you for the bump. Obviously I don't agree, it's just another language and there are several games that have this language available already. Aside from Slay the Spire, Mini Metro is another example. There may be others, but as it is currently there is no real way to know. Currently people have to try to compile lists externally to Steam, like this one for example (which also shows there is at least some interest in it): https://www.instagram.com/esperantaj_ludoj/

I really like Esperanto, so I'll second that.

Q: Will you be adding any additional languages to STS?

We do appreciate your interest in the Steam Translation Server and improving Steam for users in your region. However, we currently aren't looking into adding any further languages to STS.

Does Esperanto even have words for some video game concepts? IIRC it's a centralized language, slow to adapt. So you would have to resort to longwinded descriptions for some stuff.

Do you know any game on Steam officially supporting Esperanto?

Officially, no. I know Slay the Spire had a few (really just a few) users submitting translations in Esperanto for it. Don't know if it went anywhere though.

Don't more people speak High Valyrian, Quenya and Klingon?

still game devs problem, and i dont care if a russian , install and want german voice and english tekst. all that zone issue and language pack why do they claim size is a issue then scripts can solve this. get german version from that zone and english from that zone. let user change as they see fit.

its like they drop they ball somewhere.

what if i want to learn japaness why not grant it if game support it in tekst, with whatever voice game support. ( why do they make it way more complicated then it is. )

Have you ever visited an international (or national) Esperanto meeting? :P

Though, Esperanto is the only language of all the previously named ones, which atleast at some point got teached in school and still is teached in some schools.

With about 2 million speakers, it's quite a big one, I would say. (And there are always thousands of people who are not counted in, as you know)

Besides that, Esperato is easier than any (spoken) language.
High Valyrian and such are pretty damn cool, I give it that. But Esperanto is used for international communication. There are also some people not knowing any English, but speaking Esperanto. That's something some people should be aware of.

Also, a previous comment about "No native speakers of Esperanto" is technically wrong. There are people learning it from birth on as their second mother tounge, and even then there are villages and cities (even here in Germany), where people regulary speak Esperanto. Some are even (ridiculous enough) to teach their children how to speak Esperanto only without any German or other languages at all. Now how are they supposed to interact with such platforms?

Eh, but I am not really complaining. I mean, they have enough forums and such. I am just interested in artificial and any other languages, so I would like to see those in such platforms and all games.

I am against the extreme regulation of everything which is even the slightest important. Such as languages or even the whole battle of Steam against EGL, for example. Why not create an universal Platform where everything is available? The whole dividing between GOG, Uplay, etc. gets on my nerves.

I might be too conservative to let things drift away from another...

1.2 million signed up to learn High Valyrian last year alone. The other two also have hugely popular franchises pushing them. I'm fairly confident more people speak make believe languages than a constructed one.

That said, Valve should allow the developers to submit a language for inclusion in the list or allow them to enter a custom one. I'm with you on that.

Signed up? Are you speaking of Duolingo or something like that? (Then the next question would be, how many speak such make believe languages fluently? That's something which is totally unsure, I believe.)

Nontheless, I really would like something like greenlight, where people can vote for a language. It should be regulated, but not striktly, that's what I meant above.

Oh, and I don't see this as a discussion about who is right or wrong. I just openly talk about what I think. I am just clarifying that, if anyone persumed that I would go for a discussion. Therefor I hope we can keep up the good conversation atmosphere if anything else needs to be said. :cozybethesda:
