[solved] default browser of opening URLs in chat
Hi

I use Firefox and would love for Steam to use that as my main browser when clicking on links in chat, and it does works sometimes, but most of the times it just uses Chrome.

Any way I can force Steam to use only Firefox as its main browser?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure, but I have to ask what on earth are you doing clicking on links in chat? Unless you are absolutely certain you know the person well and trust them, you should NEVER do this.

Have you not seen the problems in the last few days alone on these forums due to the recent phishing scam?

I appreciate your concern for my digital safety, but that is not what I made this topic for.

I realise that, which is why I gave my answer to that question first. I just felt it needed to be pointed out - not just for you but for other s that will read the thread :)

Just setting Firefox as your Standard browser should work. Also links to Steam websites will always open in the client.

I will not just click on a link added by someone I don't trust. But that is also why I want FF to be my main browser - it is imo safer than most browsers out there (but that's just one of the reasons).

If FF is your default browser, Steam will always use FF.

Make sure FF is you default browser; In FF click options, then Advanced and at the bottom of Advanced under System Defaults, make sure there is a check mark next to "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup" Once you place the check mark, if FF is not your default browser, you will get a pop up asking if you want it to be. You may have to re-boot your pc to get the pop up.

You're welcome.

No matter what browser you have set to default Steam will choose to do what ever it wants to do when opening a link regardless of how you have the default set.

You're half right...

Steam makes a decision on how to open the link. If it's a Steam link, it will always open in the client, however, for other links it will choose the system default browser.

So yes, Steam makes the decision but it does (often) decide to use the browser you've chosen.

Okay, can someone help me out here? I am having a related issue with Far Cry Primal. When I try to click the links for hints, etc in the game menu that are SUPPOSED to go to an external browser, they go to the Steam browser--which does NOT register the link. It just stays at the Steam advert link or whatever is up in the window. Link to my post on the Far Cry forums here:

this game only related problem, you should state your issue on the games own board:
