Steam is under attack-maybe-maybe not-this is a vent thread so vent or don't vent

I just searched for "Steam" in Bing search engine and the top return was a fake website with a fake IP that installs a fake steam (in reality a bunch of viruses). Fortunately I ran it on a VM and it's no big deal but I sent a email to MS saying they are running ads on Bing for virus installers masquerading as Steam installers. Maybe MS did it on purpose.

So next I come into Steam and login with my account and suddenly the whole site is in Russian! I have to change my preferred language back to English manually which wasn't easy considering the menus were in Russian. How did that happen?

Next my son calls me said his Steam account maybe was hacked a few weeks ago so he locked it as a precaution and now can't get it unlocked three weeks later and no response from tech support.

I'm reading about all kinds of Steam messaging attacks containing viruses.

I try to post this message and the site gives me an error...goes down and I can't refresh the page for a few minutes...check my internet connection and all is good.

So I ask again...is there a concerted effort to attack Steam lately? And...can my kid get his account unlocked so he can play all those games we bought and paid for???

No....my sarcasm...not yours. Really! Unless you can call someone at Steam and tell them to pick up the phone and call MS to complain and be more responsive to people who've had their accounts hacked.....I don't think there's much you can do.....

Venting on the other hand....gets noticed and may draw attention the problems. So feel free to vent....because that will actually help.

Again, your imagination is quite astounding, somehow making the leap from someone knowing the definition of a thing to that person actually being that thing in your mind. I was simply trying to explain the difference to you for informational purposes. Perhaps you should just go to bed, friend. You're starting to get borderline insulting here and that's a no no on these forums.

did you know when you turn on a ventilator and you get close to it and start speaking, you will sound like glados from portal? no? try it, your mouth has to be really close. if it doesnt sound like glados, remove the safety case of the ventilator to get even closer, trust me, it will work.

If it was meant as a joke, the proper internet protocol is to put a winking smiley [ ;) ]at the end to let the person know. Inflections and intents, even sarcasm at times are not able to be easily discerned over pure text media.

You're 'calling out' nothing other than someone who knows exactly what she is talking about. It's a simple fact that a lot of people do not know the difference and thus assume that any hijacking or scamming is a "hacker" that is "attacking Steam" when the truth could not be further. I'm not saying that such actual hacking attacks do not exist, I'm trying to make you understand that your son willingly participated in his own hijack. Knowledge is power, friend. Learn all you can and you cannot be attacked by these social engineers. They cannot get your account if you fail to fall for their links, their tricks, their promises and their lies.

Next time you install steam make sure you go to an HTTPS website. Search it vita https encrypted google via steam then you should be safe
