Change the name shown in the top right corner of steam (solved).
Hi,

I am a long time steam user and my email adress was set as account name by default, if I remember correctly. I don't want people to see my private email adress which is shown in the top right corner if I'm streaming games and want to show my steam window. Many people have a username and not an email adress shown there.

I don't want to change my account name because the steam support page already states that it is impossible. However I want to change / hide the name shown in the top right corner. Anybody knows a solution (besides using overlays to stream)?

[EDIT]: Download this skin and use it: http://boneyardbrew.deviantart.com/art/Metro-for-Steam-3-9-3-292419787

There isnt any way to do this currently, Also, there is no actual need to change the login name, as it's not visible to the public. The community name, which is what gets displayed to other people, can be changed any time.

Actually, it's the account name for us newbies.
It's still bad for us since people know step one on how to hack our account if we do stream.

OP raised a good point.
People can see our login names if we stream, etc.
That's the first step on how to hack our accounts.

Additionally if it is your email adress that is show you give people an invitation to a) Hack everything connected to the adress b) spam your email.

install a skin that hides that. or start steam in dev mode and do it yourself.

It is true though. Accounts are not brutforced these days. That talkes too much time and effort on the hackers part, not to meantion that there is protection against such methods in place.

Accounts are lost by two methods these days. A virus/malicious programs and phishing. Thoser are the easiest and most sucessful methods. Afterall, the user is the weakest link in any security setup, while the company is the strongest.

Agreed.

Or beter yet, set up the streaming software to only show the active window instead of the whole desktop.

Remember the user who activated GTAV while doing a live stream? He gave away his game key in the process. Was a bad idea on his part and goes to show why you should be careful when streaming anything.

Like I said, the user is the weakest link in security.

Actually most of the HAcking is less people breaking in and more people opening the door and inviting them in.

You are still missing the point. My email adress is shown.. and I`m talking about hacking the email account or spamming me with trash mail.

I will check for steam skins, never heard of them before. Thanks.

The email address is only ever shown to the user. We can not see your account name or email, we only see your community use name. No one can see "the top right of your screen"
