"Your account does not have permission to send messages to non-friends"
I get the above message when trying to continue to people who have unfriended me - you know - when they did so with the chat window still open.

But I also get messages from non-friends sometimes.

That sort of make it look there are people who DO that permission from non-friends (I get the warning that they're not friends and then they can talk to me if I "allow communication with non-friend", who, admittedly, do tend to be scammers.

But what's with the contradiction?

Is there some setting (other than moderators, who I assume aren't the scammers) who have that permission set?

Thanks.

Those non-friends most likely share a SteamGroup with you.

Yea, that was my suspicion. But does does anyone other than moderators have the type of permission it's talking about?

Group chat members can send messages to one another.

Ok. Thanks.

But it would be nice if when someone unfriends you or you unfriend them and there's still a chat windows open, if either of you could still type and the other person would just get a "You're not friends [Allow or Block]" message just like it does for chat.

As usually, wouldn't take much programming effort, but for over one billion dollars per year profit, Steam can't take the time to have a programmer spend like 40 minutes (to 2 days if they're process is really ineffecient... whatever) to improve little things like this.

Make a suggestion post about it in the suggestion forum.

But yes it not bad idea to add block button on side with accepting button so can make a decision from there. Of course could just right click on them then block.

you can request to talk to non-friends, if same group chat is prevalent.

a (still) "open chat window" will not qualify to be counted as any form of permission to be able to chat with non-friends as you can open a chat window with anyone.

1) Interesting, how do you open a chat window with a non-friend who isn't in your chat group?

2) Aside from that, I was referring to a "still open chat window" that actually still had a conversation in it, not the type of "null chat" you imgur'ed.

In the cast in point, it's kind of personal, but I had to pass on a message to someone to refriend me after they might have thought I'd be upset over something I wasn't upset about, but I could see how other people would have been.

Fortunately, they had non-friend comments enabled on their profile and did refriend me, but if they didn't, I might have lost a friend I really enjoyed chatting with.

So i just wanted to add some info here... Some of these messages are NOT TRUE. im not saying that group members cant send messages or whattever, but i JUST had messages from people who i wasnt friends with. Many of them actually. One from yesterday. And when i went to ask him how his games went last night i got the errror message "Your account does not have permission to send....." so i just wanted to add that we still havent found a fix and the info isnt true.
