(solved) Someone reported me by mistake and now asks me to contact admin to clear this up
I just got a discord message from someone I never met who told me they had reported my account for illegal purchases by accident.
They said they tried to tell the admin it was a mistake but the admin would not listen and my account would be suspended.

Now they ask me to get in touch with the admin to clear this up. They provided a link to the admin and it looks like a legitimate account. So I don't think it's spam.
(In case he is around, this is the admin: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198024402255)

I logged a ticket with support providing a screenshot of the discord chat. But not sure what else to do.

Has anyone encountered something similar? Do I need to worry?

It is a scam.

They link to a Valve employee, but the person you will talk to on Discord is not the person who owns the profile or even a Valve employee.

It is a common scam.

100% a scam, one of the most common methods.
Report all involved users with the option on their profile, then block and delete them from your friend list.
Then move on with your life.

Ah, cool. Thanks. Feeling very naive now... So as long as I don't give them any info I am ok?

That's what they're hoping for. Either that or have you trade away your inventory to a supposed "admin" to have it "verified".

The most logical thing is to laugh at this sad attempt. Reports won't get you banned if you didn't do anything wrong. Wrong reports are ignored.

On the other side, the user probably never filed a report, he just wants you to believe it so you take action upon it to 'clear up' stuff. Thing is, the one you're contacting is not a steam admin.

Steam / valve staff will never directly contact you , especially not on discord or steam chat. They just take action, and you have to contact them yourself by using the support ticket system.

Thanks all. Lesson learnt. At least I was suspicious enough to ask here! :winter2019happyyul:

Sometimes you just have to ask. Better that you did instead of just blindly following what you were being told by the scammers.

I actually fell for this exact scam in 2019 before I flew for my holidays and I had to get my brother to get access into this account to then regain access, people these days are heartless.

I then regained access after I returned from my holidays.

I had this exact scam again just a few days ago but luckily I was smart enough to deal with it.
