Download speed problem keeps dropping randomly. 250Mbps connection (HELP)

I don't know why but my PC or Steam has been having a very annoying problem recently. Games that should've taken 15 to 30 mins to download on my connection end up taking 2 hours to download.

I've tried clearing steam config, steam download cache, flushing dns, resetting my wifi adapter, changing steams download settings, nothing has fixed this problem.

Chrome, Origin, Epic Games all download fine at above 35 to 40mb/s, steam however, spikes to 25 and drops to 0 consistently.

What the ♥♥♥♥.

Here's a screenshot of it happening. It starts at 30 and drops to 5, or 0 and then it'll climb back up to 30/40 and do it all over again.

A game that takes not even 15 mins to download on my connection ends up take 2 hours to download, you can tell this is very frustrating.

And then you look at EPIC Games or Origin I have absolutely no issues there. I'm able to download a 80gb game in a hour on there, on steam however? I'd be lucky to play it before I fall asleep.

as long as the disk activity is not zero, nothing is really wrong. your system is just too slow to handle the download process or something is interfering with it and makes it slower. "downloading" on Steam is a bit more than just downloading files.

It does depend on the game and your system.

Some games download in a straight stream with consistent speed, but others - like Ark, for example - download a bit, unpack it and decompress it then write it, then continue and so on.

So have a look at your disk activity when this is happening. If it's 0 then there is something else going on. If it's not 0 then this is normal.

Yep, HDD write speed is what's dropping. I'm using an Seagate Baracuda ST2000DM008 as a game drive, and it appears these drives are junk.

Just to be clear here, it should be RISING when the downloads drop off and vice versa. Although again, you need to be a little careful with this, as games are different, some might spend a whole load of time unpacking which pushes more usage onto the CPU than the disk at that point.

So, kind of play it by ear and give things a wide margin of difference.

The only thing you look out for is unreasonable levels, basically.
