Refunding a Digital Download?
So, a few days ago, I purchased a copy of DOOM from Gamestop. It was not a physical copy, but rather an activation code I could use here on Steam. I would just like to preface this next part by saying I have NEVER played a PC game before, and as such, I know absolutely nothing about how things are supposed to work. It was not until after I had already redeemed the code on Steam that I realized my computer did not meet the specs required to run the game properly.

The entire reason I bought a PC version of the game is so that I wouldn't have to shell out $300 for a PS4, if that's the only game I was going to be playing. I have now bought a $60 game, only to find I would need to shell out even more money for a new computer just to play it. At this point, the game seems to be much more trouble than it is worth, and I just want my money back. Store credit does me no good, since, as stated before, I don't even PLAY PC games in the first place; DOOM just looked like a lot of fun and I thought it would be a good game to start with.

Since the activation code was bought through a retailer, Steam told me to talk to them about the issue. Gamestop, however, says I cannot get a refund from them. I fully understand why, since it's not a physical disk I can actually hand back to them. All I want is the understanding that I feel like I got ripped off here, since I bought a game I cannot play in any capacity.

So by your own admittion here, you know nothing about computers or system specs, and you bought a game that will not play on your computer, and you feel ripped off ???

You bought the game at Gamestop.

This is not a Steam issue, as you did not buy the game on Steam.

Exactly, as this is the rigth course of action.

Be warned, any media you buy gives trouble for refund if seal is broken.

You should insist that you can not use what you bought. You have very good chances if they didnt display the requirements.

when did they start selling cd keys at retail locations?

:cwat:
Stores generally don't give refunds on PC games because they can't take the game back from your Steam account. It's not like a console game where giving back the disc means you can't play it anymore.

you have to scroll a bit.

no store will make this mistake. system requirements exist solely because of this.

Steam games? Often keys in a box with steam on a cd.

Keys can be revoked from accounts.

That's how lots of games come now. They have the box and it's just a key inside.

I've never heard of stores like Gamestop doing it though. They would have to contact the publisher and tell them which keys to revoke.

Basically physical copies are sold at retail outlets that are labelled with Steamworks meaning the cd-key or license contained in the package has to be activated on Steam.

It's becoming more common that the contents on the physical media only has a fraction of data and/or has a Steam installation file.

but the op did not get a physical copy.

still lost...

:qr:
It's really not a big deal as the OP can just keep the game on his account. Then one day get a better computer to play it on.

Problem solved.

You can buy digital downloads at GameStop. They just print the code on the receipt you get in an email

Note GameStop does not do refunds on video games. Physical or digital.
