I have gigabit internet and steam is downloading at a max of about 30 mb/s.

I have fiber with the full gigabit bandwith. Every time i download a game, i only get 30mb/s and i should be getting at least 100 mb/s. The download rate is also all over the place with it soetimes getting as low as a few hundred kilabits per second. I do speed test and it says everything is fine. i also have a gigabit port in my pc and im running a cat6 cable so it should be able to handle it no problem. Please help.

Steam throttles the download speeds, I get about 7mb/s max so you really have nothing to complain about.

If you are expecting 1gb/s download it's not going to happen whatever region you choose.

You can limit steam downloads to 25mbyte/s.
So its obvious it can go up.
If i am not wrong, people loaded with way more mB/s than that.

I personally download games on Steam at 12MB/s and I have a friend who's able to download at 30MB/s on Steam.

So, 25 is definitely not the cap.

At no point did anyone say that 25 mb/s was the cap my point was that Steam isn't going to download at full whack regardless of what internet you have. I would be thrilled with 30mb/s download personally and i have internet that would seemingly be capable of that but mine is 'capped' at 7mb/s even though my settings it is not limited.

My add that 25 is definitely not the cap was in addition (as support) to what Muppet said, not as a "Told you so."

Considering how Steam downloads files, a lot is dependent on your CPU and the target disk too. If you're downloading something heavily packed, like PAYDAY 2 - it's not going to download full speed at all times, no way.

Steam can download as fast as your ISP will allow you to download.

Yep. As my ISP kept upgrading its speed, my steam download speed kept raising.

Yeah my download speed here has increased over the multiple internets and ISP's that I have had too but it isn't what my ISP provides. It is approximately 6-9x less than what I actually am supposed to get and always has been.

There was this one place I lived with absoloutly terrible internet which my cap was like 400 kb/s lol. Took me like 5 days to download a game, can't remember which. Now I have 7mb/s on Steam.

A gigabit connection should give him 125 megabytes per second as a theoretical maximum.

Steam downloads have higher i/o ops due to otf decompression, validating and patching files. depending on what files this can be hard taxing on any hdd.
from personal experience with normal hdds, stuff rarely goes beyond 60-80MByte/s, for faster downloads you need an ssd or a raid.

the whole file checking thing is done by the cpu, much more impactful then you think. it is mostly due to the fact that Steam does not use all cores to do so but again also depending on what files.

aside from that and tested under better conditions, Steam does not throttle anything, if someones throttles it is someone in the line, mostly your ISP.

That would most likely be the difference between MBytes/s and Mbits/s. Mbit is 8 times more than a MByte and your ISP shows speeds in Bits while steam by default shows in Bytes.

Hence the 8 times difference.

I disagree. I have fiber 100up/100down. SSD w/ current market CPU. Yet my download never goes above 12mb/s. They absolutely do throttle given said logic (nothing personal against your post).

I've tried multiple servers, both close and far to account for traffic. It won't rise above 12mb/s.
