How do I turn off chat trade messages?
Or quickly clear all trade chat messages at once leaving just actual real chat messages? Right now my alt has 121 message notifications and I don't seem to have any way of telling which of them have actual messages or which of them aren't automatic trade chats.

It's rubbish, it's annoying, I don't want chat messages to be generated by steam servers every time someone does a trade with me, especially when they didn't write anything in the trade message box.

A trade is not a chat and trades should not be notified as chats.
What are trade chats?

Every time someone sends you a trade offer steam also creates an empty message and sends it to your chat as a message and then notifies you that you have a new message that isn't really a message at all.

Never seen that. I get trade notifications, that's true. Are you in the Steam client beta, by any chance?
Nope, not beta, it's server side anyway, have people sent you trade offers recently?

Yes, I've sent a dozen trading cards from my DS account to this one and got a trade notification, nothing else.
They're doubly crap, I clicked one of the trade chat notifications and instead of showing me what the trade was it instead said trade already done on an error page without any details of the actual trade, FML.

I haven't figured out yet why / when they get generated, factors could include:
Whether person is a friend,
Whether trade is a gift or not,
Whether trade being sent from browser, steam client or other software,
More?
I don't understand how more people don't have an issue with this. Did you figure a way to turn these off?
Nope so far and that sucks. I'd like to know how to hide this cancer as well. I'm running card trade bot on my account and every time a friend sends a trade I end up with completely useless chat message informing me about a trade that is already done. Like there is no indicator for trades already. -_-

839 unread chat messages, I'm not going to waste my time dealing with that amount of utterly useless automated junk, there really should be a way to turn it off.

It's wrong, steam should not be spamming & flooding my chat with crap I don't want.

The way I do it now is to just use ctrl+tab to switch between tabs until they're all read. It is really, really obnoxious even having to do this for something that should be able to be switched off. Even the few seconds it takes to do it is a waste.
Meh, I'd still end up with 40+ open tabs and this wouldn't fix the problem of any real messages being drowned in trade messages.
Yeah, I know what you're saying but ctrl+tab to switch and ctrl+w to close just like in chrome at least makes it less mouse work. And since it autoscrolls to the bottom at least you can see whether it's just a trade offer before tapping ctrl+w. You're not going to get any argument about this issue being ridiculous from me, just offering up my meager way of dealing with it.
Any news about this issue?
not an issue, some people just make it to be one.
