Watch out for scams
So there is a link to a steam-lookalike website going around, with somebody pretending to give out Rocket League skins for free

The link he gives directs you to a shady site with a weird steamcommunity lookalike name. Pretty sure the "add friend" link on that site installs malware as my friend got hacked after clicking it tonight and as soon as you talk to the guy he sends you the link

Free RL skins might be tempting for some, but watch out guys

He’ll get the link filtered out within Steam.

A rule of thumb is to not click on links from random people or even friends for the most part since they can get hijacked.

Just remember to keep all trades to the Steam trade window and if they tell you to click on a link on their profile copy the link to notepad and check it before you click it, (you can tell a Steam trade link from other links).

This is very good advice, not to say the rest of your post wasn't. Becasue we have seen more and more of the impersonation scams lately it seems. So yes, the friend's account could have been hijacked, or an alt could appear just like one of the friends on the user's list.

Don't just click links. Good stuff.

Yea, sadly I was a victim of this scam. Didn't see that the URL was different and "logged on" the fake website and lost control of my account. Fortunately, Steam Support was fast and helped me get my account back.

All I can say is that I was stupid, but since I haven't traded items in a long time, I mostly forgot about all the scam techniques that currently exist. Guess it seemed legit to me since it was advertised as an event on a group that I actually got invited to recently....gosh I'm stupid.

A group that was probably created by the scammers to phish for account info.

Guess it was foolish of me to accept random group invites, even though I don't really play Rocket League anymore. Oh well, it all turned out well in the end thanks to Support but still, it sucks when it happens. In the future, I guess I should be cautious when joining groups or clicking on any links, even though it's mostly a known scam. Being tired can really lead to some bad stuff sometimes, since you don't really pay much attention at that point.

Good to know you got all your stuff back and that you've learnt from the experience

Good thing that Steam Support is helpful, although others might not agree on that. Otherwise it would've been pretty bad..
