STEAM LINK EXPOSED MY IP ADDRESS

So, some shifty guy added me after a matchmaking match, i've been playing mm only on my alt acc. That means there's no way he could find out my ip nor my operating sys. We talked nicely but then he claims that he can hack steam accounts. It sounded nuts to me, so i took that as a joke. Then he sends me some horribly broken steam art with no name, no preview pic and description. I've been on steam for over 7 yrs and i thought i learnt all the ways of steam phishing and etc. I accurately checked the link on spelling, and i assure you it was actually a steam link leading to some screenshot/artwork. Then this guy tells me the country i'm living in and my ip adress. Then says my operating system. I was kind of confused, because it's no fun when someone discloses your info, even if it's your ip address. I did some researches over what happened and concluded that there are actually cases when your info gets exposed after clicking on some links, but it was a steam link. Nowhere is safe! Just wanted to warn you guys, and alongside ask whether you had something like that happened to you in before.

Your IP address is not 'private'. Your IP is exposed whenever you do lieterally anything on the internet itself.

If you click on a link, then the server owner knows

1) your IP
2) what region you live via the IP not to mention your profile already tells me you're in the UK
3) your OS as that's sent by your browser

switch to dynamic ip on your router or ask you isp to let you use dynamic ips.

therefore your ip is private to me and everyone else on the same user level. Steam knows it, of course but that is not the problem. OP claims that someone on the same user level acquired the IP over Steam .. which is possible but not over artwork. Steam exposes the IP to userlevel at 2 possible points. one should be well known, the other not so much.

also forklinks are a common method to acquire this information. they dont draw too much suspicion because they end up on a legit destination

Note that your IP is a fundamentally public thing. It cannot be hidden. Its public in that regard. Therefore you should not consider your IP to be 'private information'.

Actually this is entirely possible. Many TF2/CSGo sites will list your connecting IP address as part of their stat tracking mechanism. Other sites list it as well if they're posting logs.

Its not entirely impossible for your IP to be exposed and searchable on google. Any more than you can expose your entire life on the Internet, if you choose to.

No he couldn't track me where i am living, i was using alt private acc while talking to him and played on mm server only, you can't just determine someone's ip by typing "status" in the console.

Naming and shaming is against steam rules.
The link he sent you must of had a redirect in there before going to the real source hence how he got your info. As far as the ip it don't give you exact house number where you live only the city your in. Nothing to worry about.

You sent him your ip the moment you started chatting with him, that's all he needed. Your computer broadcasts operating system details alongside that. This is hardly new or scary. At best you've been hoodwinked to be "scared" of someone doing something ANYONE could do with a 5 minute google search.

No, they really couldn't. The link you provided doesn't even set precedence for a legal case to be made against sharing data broadcasted publicly. In fact the only thing it even mentions is how that data can be stored.

Sorry, but it opened in a steam browser, no redirection was made. The artwork he sent was opened in STEAM BROWSER. A built in one
