OpenGL-program.exe has stopped working
Hi!

For couple of weeks now I've had this issue every time when starting Steam.
"Opengl-program.exe has stopped working"

I haven't changed anything or installed anything new.
I can't find any tips on google.

Any way to troubleshoot this issue?

Scan for malware using Malwarebytes.

Nothing found. I'll run full virus check too.

Full virus scan found nothing. Same as malware scan.

If it is a virus, it's quite well hidden. Also, why is it informing me every time I start up Steam?

C:/ProgramFiles(x86)/Steam/opengl-program.exe
Size 39 KB
File details tell nothing.

I deleted the file and restarted Steam. Steam took a long time to start, said it was updating. And after restart the file was recreated in the same folder.

Yea that file is normal and should be there, it's not a virus.

This is not necessarily relevant.

Things update and change on your system without you actively doing it. We see that often here, and as users say the same exact thing.

For example, that is an .exe process. What if you have an overprotective or misconfigured antivirus program, or other security process, that is quarantining the .exe file, false flagging it as malicious ?

"Stopped working" errors can often be caused by just that.....bad or misconfigured antivirus or security software.

What do you have installed on your system ? Steam is surely never the problem. The conflict may usually be with another program or process on your computer, even if you have had it forever and not had issues.

Same error here, can´t start any game. Virus scan also found nothing.

Are you using an Antivirus or other realtime protection?
If so which one(s)?

Also what else is running in the background?

Try bringing up WINKEY+R > type MSCONFIG > click OK
then un-tick box for "Load Startup Items" and click OK, then Restart.

Then try Steam again after a reboot.

Please opt into the Steam Beta, this has addressed issues for many users.

I only have 4 startup items enabled, one of them being Avast's "AvLaunch component".

Last time Avast was a problem was when it changed my power plan every time I booted a game. Took a long time to find out it was Avast with it's "Gaming Mode".
That's why I first suspected Avast as the problem source.

I have tried temporarily disabling Avast's features and adding Steam directory to exceptions for features I didn't want to disable.
None of this has worked and the error message has come up every time I boot Steam.

I've checked every other running process, I keep a close eye on them all the time. All of them are either Windows processes or programs for my hardware, not much else.

Disabling startup items from MsConfig had no effect. Same error message appeared when booting Steam.

I have the same problem since the newest steam client update,
Windows 8.1 64 bit, Radeon HD 7800 with Crimson 17.7.1 WHQL.
Look like only Windows 8 or/and AMD GPU users have this problem.

no clue what the opengl thing actually does, but it belongs to Steam. since opengl is clearly a graphical api thing, some things that come to my mind.

VR headset/devices (emulated)?
aside from gpu driver any other programs running or installed that modify graphical things?
any other programs that imposes an overlay?

some maybe fixes(temporary):
if you can actually open Steam, go to

1. settings -> in-game and disable the first 3 checkboxes.
2. settings -> interface and disable direct write and hardware video acceleration checkboxes.
3. settings -> broadcasting and disable it

restart Steam, test/wait for the expected error behavior at each step. in something fixes it, try enabling checkboxes one by one with test in-between.

Same problem here, just started showing up TODAY. Performed SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) but it didn't fix the problem. I also tried running the OpenGL-program.exe file as Administrator and I got this error message: The program can't start because VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing from your computer.
