i enjoy, much more, achievement hunting on Steam than i have ever enjoyed on Xbox or other consoles. i think, in part, it is because i enjoy the showcases on Steam and how i can feature, specifically, certain achievements that i want to show off.. or that i just think have funny names.
i also enjoy comparing and looking at the achievements of others on Steam more. i think for me it is more fun on Steam because i enjoy the social aspects of Steam more than on consoles.
But, also, i can see how for someone else they may perfer the way it is done on consoles more. Each person is different afterall.
I would love for Steam to reiterate on their Steam Achivements and be creative when you unlock them with a cool unique sound as well as a unique way in displaying it.
In steam its nothing. If atleast you could level your profile with it, but not. It all has to be based on money. Money all the time. Thats all Valve cares about. Also you can easily cheat your achievements and nothing is done against it. For example the game "Zombie Panic Source":
Exactly 7.2% percent of ZPS players have unlocked 1/2 of the achievements, on the other half its exactly 7.1% you cant tell me thats an coincidence on 60 achievements which are actually VERY hard to get.
Also companies exist to make money indeed. Capitalism for ya
No one cares about achievements? Said who? Apparently many ppl care enough to mass unlock them though
The only one who really cares is Microsoft. They have a clearly regulated system and go after the cheaters.
Sony's guidelines for trophies seem to be only that and whether or not games have platinum trophy (i.e. a "full" trophy set) seems to be up to throw of a coin. The "Bid for Greatness" auctions has also shown how blind they are for cheaters or eveen the idea that someone would cheat trophies.
Steam achievements are a wild west. Games ranging from 1-1500 achievements, achievements which ned you to buy other game or be a kickstarter backer, achievements which can be unlocked via inGame cheats, ...
There are no "ranks" for gamerscore. All leaderboards are inofficial. Profile level on PSN is just another form of gamerscore. In fact it's just a hidden score.
Steam profile level works completely different and is aking more to a freemium community feature.
I'd class achievements into three categories.
Category 1 are what I'd call progress achievements. They usually measure how far you've gone through the game or are cumulative achievements you'd get by playing long enough.
Category 2 achievements are what I'd call odd ball achievements. They are not a major problem in single player games where it may require a specific task to be done in a specific way with a specific character. They are more of a problem in games like TF 2 where players can be more focussed on their personal achievements than helping the group.
Category 3 achievements are what I call toxic achievements. These include the treasure gathering achievements in Depth which encourage achievement hunting divers to rush off grabbing as much reasure as they can rather than work as a team to beat the sharks. These are achievements which spoil other people's enjoyment.
And for what ?
I occasionally check out achievements to measure my progress against that of the community as a whole. But since I discovered that 100% completing Steam achievements has absolutely no impact I lost interest in spending hours in a game trying to do obscure stuff to "complete" the game.
And I don't think I've ever even looked at what another player's achievements were.
A bit like Steam level it seems to be a lot of fuss for very little.
S.x.
Lmao, lets not act like steam barely survives with the money they are making at the moment.
And the people mass unlocking them (I assume you mean the S.A.M. cheaters) only want to look cool, which only works untill you see that all achievements are unlocked at the same time.
/Edit also on PS3 you need a jailbroken PS3, which would require you to buy 2 PS3's if you dont want to get banned.
Anecdotal evidence at best. I have a hard time to find people with any interest in trophies at all on PSN when I look at random profiles.
"Noone cares about achievements on steam."
Not quite.
On XB or PS consoles that give external rewards for achievements, people care about achievements because of those external rewards.
On Steam, where achievements carry no external rewards, people attach different meanings to the achievements.
People like you who are looking specifically for external rewards will be disappointed and thus feel that the achievements are pointless.
But for other people, some people appreciate them as suggestions for gameplay, and some other people appreciate them for recording milestones of their gameplay experiences.
Some people get achievements in order to showcase them. Sometimes they pick out the achievements they want based on the achievements' icons, so they can spell out a thing, even. For them it's like a public trophy case on their profile.
Some people have even set up and/or use external sites where they get to show off and compare their achievements.
And finally there are some people who just don't care about achievements at all, period, so for them, all achievements are meaningless anyway.
