Does Steam do community games anymore?
What happened with those games that ran parallel to the sales each year?

Is it now all just about collecting cards n stickers? tf :steamsad:

We have a mega thread about this where even the mods have even explained why events are no longer a thing.

It’s the huge “Why this the worse sale ever Mega!” thread.

Search function on the side or we have to rehash like loads of debate and pages again.

Edit: It’s literally the post under yours!

"Why we can't have nice things", answer #1: Abuse. Someone is always trying to game the system so hard, you'd think their life depended on it.

Most likely they are to busy with Steam Deck, Steam OS, Proton, Dota 2, CSGO and what games they are working.

Anyways those games are pointless.

Go back to when those games were running and you'll just find a litany of complaints from epiople whining about how they're not winning and the game is rigged blah, blah blah.

I really miss these games too...

That being said, @Pscht and @Start_Running said it best:

Dead simple and you can easily find your answer by checking the history of Steam.

It's abuse. As it usually is.

Back around ten years ago they had the sweet function of having certain games acheivements unocking either small token rewards in the game or other vouchers. That progressed onwards until we reached a point where one Winter Sale, every purchase above a certain amount earned you a dip in the tombola.

You'd either get a game (very rare), or a vouchers for discount on a game, or a bit of coal. You could use the coal and save them up to "craft" either a voucher or game.

Can you guess what happened? Some found an exploit. Which meant that they could create LOADS of steam accounts and amass tons of the games, vouchers and coal.

The prize pool of games was exhausted long before the sale ended. And obviously the devs concerned were not amused.

So that's why they;ve been whittled back. Idiot abusers like so many times in other places, ruin things for everyone else.

oof that's so sad, I hope they could find a way around it or just reduce the prize pool. Steam events were always Something I used to look forward to, now it's just another stale sales page (where often I can find cheaper deals somewhere else) 😰

Well obviously they can't find a way round it (or the devs don't wan to risk it anymore).

It's sad but as with anything of value, people spoil it.

That's the problem. No matter the prize pool, so long as its a case where someone wins the prize and someone doesn't...they's gonna be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. An now that the community events been set up so everyone wins, people complain.

Don't make it any value then, badges for participation and solo play tasks to get it.

No reason to abuse and no 3p33n to engorge.

It went wrong when they made it teams and prizes, morons on the internet are always trying to speed run/exploit/glitch anything.

It should be about fun for the individual not rewarding a team or 'winner'.

more (e)venturous things at sales will probably only happen in summer sale

has nothing to do with abuse. winter sale is simply overloaded with Awards, minor feature highlighting and the sale badge.

I'd actually love to get the mini games back. No rewards or anything needed, just a bit of silly fun again. I liked the previous click event, I think that one came with a sort of team-based structure, too. We'll have to see what happens in the next one.
Personally I felt their zenith was with the themed events based on games.

You'd get certain games where they'd have new achievements added based on the season/sale, and if you played (and/or bought) the game and worked to do the requirements you not only unlocked something within the game, but you also got a ticket or something.

They actually felt rewarding and involved a bit of well, gameplay.

Which is what they do.

That's the point here. They offer now what they can that can't be abused so easily. What they can't do is just wave a magic wand and do miracles.

Yeah but then you have people complaining about the lack of proper prizes and incentives... when people complain not matter what you do or don't do, you might as well do nothing. Developing those events cost time and money....at least not doing them saves you time and money.

I mean look at what they did for the Summer Sale. That's probably as much as you're going to get, and people still complained.

Can you imagine what it must be like for the people who have to come up with these things?

Personally I felt the zenith was the sticker album in 2017, I loved the juxtaposition of the nice, happy sticker pages with the kind of dark, almost dystopian trading cards which were twists of the scenes in the sticker album. Plus, the images were the kind of really nice things you do during childhood summers (and older if you're lucky): camping, going to the beach, playing volleyball, having picnics etc and it was fun with different characters from various games. The boardwork was my favourite, and the trading card of it, empty and covered in sand just seemed so bleak lol

I believe people exploited that at the time as well by using the stickers to create NSFW images which is why we weren't able to keep our sticker albums, but luckily I screenshot mine before they went and added them as profile art.

I suppose it's possible to have some kind of interesting event but the key is to anticipate any possible way people could do something undiserable, of course it's hard to anticipate everything people will do because people will always surprise you and unexpected things always happen...

That being said, some issues do seem easily avoidable, like with the F1 summer sale it was always likely people were going to join team Corgi because lots of people like dogs which ended up created issues down the line, all the issues could have been avoided if you were allocated a team randomly. Which I believe was the case in the Summer 2013 sale.

The last summer sale was pretty decent with the choose your own adventure short stories. My slight issue is that it would have been better if each each story came out on a different day of the sale, to give something to anticipate and look forward to. I personally tried to ration myself to one story per day, but I know a lot of people did them all in one go which kinda makes the fun very short-lived. Summer is also my favourite season so I would love something with really summery vibes.

In terms of this sale, the artwork is pretty nice, I just wished they did something with it. Like something to use the stickers for, because I'm not sure I'm going to use a rabbit on a snowboard in my conversations with people. I'm not psychic but just a feeling... Or something to unlock or something tangible. It doesn't have to be voucher or anything like that...

Honestly, I feel like Valve should just hire me, I'm sure given the opportunity I could come up with some great ideas for sales!

I don't want to scroll though 35 pages, do you happen to remember what pages the mods gave their explanation?
