Why are people upset of sales tax being applied to Steam lol?
Canadian here, so anything you purchase online like Amazon, Steam, PSN, etc, etc now is taxed. Law is effective July 1st, 2021.
https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/gst-hst-businesses/digital-economy.html

The states has had the same ordeal already. Nothing brand new fellow Canucks

Since 2014 when I first made my first online purchase and -- it was taxless, I figured the government is going to catch on sooner or later and looks like 2021 was that "one day".

That said, why are some people upset over this? The government was going to touch the online world sooner or later.

That said the tax isn't even the full PST-GST. So technically would still be cheaper then buying in-store.

Never had that one, all the years on steam I was never taxed until recently.

Only people in Japan are charged JCT.
that is not charged, it is inclusive in the store price, like every other country/currency on Steam except US/CA, where the tax is additive and really charged on checkout.

even the store price will stay the same, regardless of an introduction/abolition/change of a tax.
thailand f.e. will have a 7% tax in 2 weeks, inclusive, the prices on for all product on Steam will not change, unless the product owners change them manually.

We shouldn't be taxed as we don't own anything. We are in reality only renting the game keys from steam. And why are people upset, because now in CAD we have to pay another $13 on new full priced games. It's all digital, government just finding new ways to rob.

the government is also planning on charging you for ever post on the steam forums (and only you)

That's not how taxes work. You don't 'own' a haircut yet you are correctly charged HST. HST applies to most services which you dont 'own' making an ownership as the criteria for HST as utter nonsense.

We are in reality only renting the game keys from steam.

No thats not what you're doing. you're purchasing a license. Which is not renting. Even if you were renting, which to be clear you're not, you'd still be charged HST regardless since renting is itself a service, which, *shocked pikachu face* is taxable.

You might be shocked that tax evasion is not a viable defense

Note Japan is semi-wierd in that while there is federal taxes, the price listed can be shown as "includes tax" or "excludes tax" there's no consistency for what store does what for what items. Only that the store must say which of the 2 the listed price is.

Want a Nintendo switch from Yodobashi?

https://www.yodobashi.com/product/100000001005079800/

¥32,970(税込) (tax inclusive)

Want this cool magneto statue? Kotobukiya lists 2 prices because.... whY????

https://www.kotobukiya.co.jp/product/product-0000004309/

税込価格 46,200円 (tax inclusive)
税抜価格 42,000円 (excluding tax)

I mean ultimately you're paying the tax inclusive price. But many store will try to list the tax exclusive price to draw customers in as it 'looks' cheaper. Kind of like a sign that has 90% in giant 10ft font but in tiny 0.01 microns it says "up to"

Services still get taxed.

That's not how the world works.
Other digital content such as music, ebooks, and movies get taxed as well....

Other digital game services have been taxed for years before this, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.

Because i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate my country's goverment, it physically hurts to give them money.

Because at least in my country, it was something that the government was ignorant, made everything to stop innovation and never did something to improve the infrastructure for the service (only when it became a serious business), so its just greed for some and nothing really in return at least for the customer that's is the one that is going to shallow the tax, not the company, not steam just the final customer.

To give you and example service like Steam, Netflix, Amazon, Spottily, etc. instead of paying taxes they just raised their prices from 10$ to 13$ (as example), so in the end the customer is the one to suffer.

all the time?

It was bound to happen, you are acting as if this existed since 2010, for all the 10 years worth of online shopping I have never paid PST GST. The law was announced recently this year

GST - Goods and Services Tax

It applies to basically anything that is traded (including things that are traded without actual money being transferred - eg. if you barter, you'd have to pay tax on the equivalent $ value)
Why would digital goods or services be any different ?

Bright side its still cheaper then going out and buying a game, downside that it will soon be fixed.

It was a good long run though when things weren't taxed. Canada pays an overwhelming amount but I am glad that I don't have to spend approx $10,000-20k a year for health care like my cousins in the states which includes checkups, bloodwork, etc.

Most canadians pay more than 10 to 20k per year for healthcare. you just dont see it because its bundled into income tax. Dont kid yourself, nothing is free in life, not even the air you breathe.

But it WAS bound to catch up anyway. You realise that most of the western world has ALWAYS paid tax on online purchases.

You think the greey United States wouldn't dip their fingers in that? You must be new to the world.

What does the US have to do with Canadian tax lol?

Also I wasn't disagreeing, I agreed that tax was going to be mandatory for online purchases, never disagreed.

Hey bud, just checked my tax return online I filed in 2020. It says I only payed $6.73k in taxes, so incorrect on your assumption right there lol. I payed $12,000 USD for a week in a hospital when I got injured by ATV in Wyoming. Luckily for insurance I had it reduced to $1000.

Is it common for people in the US to assume these kind of things? I provided a link of what our tax brackets look like with simple research, you could have done would get the same result.
