That's what happens if things aren't built anymore.
And yeah, Valve has no issues with you buying a device "from any stock laying around". Just don't expect cheap prices, as you can see with the Amazon sellers you found.
Instead of buying discontinued hardware, look for something else to use instead.
Also use something else... I get it but want to use the steam hardware as the steam link app runs perfect but want it on my TV and I am not casting to my phone to the tv... major lag etc and after the steam link.
I wish I was made aware during the last sale that it would be the last time ever... I was not aware at all or I would of bought one.
They can take the credit from my steam wallet and post me one... happily do that at sale price of full hardware price.. if new. I do not want the controller, just the box and cables for tv as I use Xbox one controller which is perfect for me.
It was *very* well advertised that it was going completely dead.
If you want to do Steam link, get an raspberry Pi, or get a laptop, and do in-home stream.

Also doesn't defeats the point, unless you only want the device itself, and not about being able to stream your game which is the point, and can be done by using raspberry Pi, or use laptop for in home streaming, nothing changes if your goal was to stream your game from Desktop PC to somewhere else such as living room, or across town. But you do what you want.
Depending on the TV you have, you could download the Steam Link App for it and it does the same thing.
My Samsung Smart TV has it, for example.
The app was the replacement for the Steam Link. It is available on iOS, Android and other devices.
I have an LG Smart TV which doe not show the Steam Link, so I googled this and found it's not on LG TV's.. If it was then yeah it would be alot better for me!
A) Buy the Steam Link from 3rd party such as amazon, ebay, or etc...
B) Get a Raspberry Pi, download the Steam link, and there you go, you got yourself a Steam link.
C) Get a Laptop, and use in-home streaming, which is like the Steam link.
If you haven't notice Steam link, is pretty much a raspberry pi with Valve steam link software, so you're not missing anything, or getting anthing special with the Steam link device.
