Why are like 95% of Free games on steam either trash or pay2win/freemium?
I mean, I understand its free, which is why you have to pay it. But all of the games are so short lasting and sometimes really ♥♥♥♥♥♥

Because we live in an age where if something works, everyone tries to get in on it. Most will cut as many corners as possible to maximize monitization. There are fanes where you literally do NOTHING and have an option to pay money to get more stuff for doing nothing. And people pay it.

I like to call it the gold rush effect. One oerson stumbles onto a good idea and makes money off it. And then everyone quickly follows with their crappy clones that include an item store.

Maybe stop being cheap and spend some money.

That is free to play in general, not just on Steam.
Some people invest several hundreds of money in free to play games.
They are free to find these people.

What you thought is a question you had is actually an answer you can see.

why do people pay for a game and its expansions/addons regulary AND for a monthly subscription fee to play literally the same stuff that is available in dozens of variations as free to play?

there are several free mmos that put wow to shame in terms of playing mechanics and endgame content.

While you can pay for bad things,
and get good things free. But those arent made to make money, which makes them not designed to make you pay, if they are fun and free.

I don't find em all to be too bad. A lot are p2w but some are gems that you can get some satisfaction out of from grinding.
That isn't my experience.

Firstly start at the top of the most played list of free games and work your way down, not vice versa.

There are some awesome free games. TF2 (I paid for mine as part of Orange Box but still). Robocraft. Paladins has been getting really good reviews. Eve online is now F2P.

I for one am very grateful to Valve for all the great free to play games on Steam. It makes Steam more of a democratic experience where anyone with the hardware and an internet connection can come and play. Nightmare scenario is that if Gabe goes some new CEO might want to monetise everything.

If they are giving it away for free unless it's damaging your computer you can't really complain.

Add to that that in the sales there are some real gems you can pick up for very low money - Great Cthulu Saves the World, Castle Crashers, amazingly Skyrim.

That's one of the key things that makes Steam great.

Give Path of Exile a try. It's really actually free. They only charge for cosmetics, extra character slots, and stash tabs. They don't sell anything that would give you a boost in combat. All the areas and items in game are available to free players.
