Missions
Before i go start doing the away missions that i am looking forward to, i have one question though.

Say i send a shuttle with 4 armed crewmembers to an away mission. What happens when i find a survivor in that ship ? How do i get him/her back to my base when the shuttle is already full ?
Do i need to send a second shuttle along just incase or is there ample time to go back to pick up the new member ?
Or do i have to let them draw straws and the one that drew the shortest one gets left behind with best wishes ?

There always seems to be extra shuttles at the missions for survivors/prisoners that you can claim. There may be some exceptions, but thats my experience so far.
Ah thank you. Did not think of that option.
no, can't go back, most of those are one-visit only, there is no going back. but I guess you're sticking them in the cargo section, cause it seems fine? and as was said, you can claim any existing...

also, be warned: 4 people is probably not going to be enough unless it's one of those "rescue" one-time visit spawns locations you're talking about... for the pirate base, alien nest, bot factory, Haven mining sectors, be prepared to send 2, 3, 4 shuttles, all full! and the less bodies you send, the more they need to be really leveled good traits people with good accuracy health energy and weapon skill, top-end gear, and augmentations. the pirate base and the mining sectors especially... I sent a single shuttle to the pirate base and when I got there and deployed, just laughed climbed back in the shuttle and clicked abandon mission, woulda been suicidal and over in seconds. came back with 12 combat-ready crew and it was still 3 against 1, and a long but very fun fight.

Haha fun, my first mission was one of the exeptions right away :-D

Arrived in system with a shuttle filled with 4 crewmembers. In the system a derelict civilian ship and a derelict navy/police ? ship. An intact civilian ship asked to retrieve 3 corpses from the derelict civilian ship.
Docked at the weck and turned out to have robots in it. ( i dislike those. Unlike bugs, they have no barriers and all zoom in on you at once )
I cleared the wreck and found Gary locked up in one of those pods. I released him and turns out he was a crewmember of that navy ship and would want to come back as a refugee.
Well, no room in my shuttle and no spare shuttle in sight so sorry Gary it's a no show.
While i was clearing the wreck, in the other navy wreck spawned one of those drone launchers. So that ship was also infected by bots. The drones swarmed out and attacked the questgiver ship. I did not notice because i was clearing that other ship at that time.
When i loaded up the bodies and wanted to take them to the questgiver ship i noticed it only has a sliver of hull left. So i raced to the docking port under gunfire from the drones to deliver the bodies, get paid and gain standing.
Right as i docked and unloaded the 3 bodies and they were about to press the ok on the wire transfer their ship blew up and i failed the mission.
I boogied out of there in my banged up shuttle. Three less composter corpses, no paycheck, no reputation gain and Gary left behind.

Good start for a first mission hahahaha
In my playthrough, I sent a shuttle on an "away mission" to help a friendly ship rescue its crew. When my shuttle arrived, there were no further instructions or details on what must be done -- just a friendly ship and two derelicts filled with rogue bots.

I managed to explore both derelicts and kick out all the rogue bots, but there were no captive humans on either derelict (so it's not clear what the actual purpose of the mission was / is). Also, while the friendly ship allows my shuttle to dock and refill oxygen, it will not allow my people to board their ship without starting a war.

Furthermore, when I click to abandon the mission (seeing as it seems to be bugged), no matter what I do, my crew dies in transit back to my base from starvation and wounds, even though no one has any open wounds, and I wasn't aware that I was supposed to pack food, water, or whatever, for the trip.

Does anyone have any tips on how to keep the whole crew from dying on the flight back?
When you arrive you click ok on the message that pops up. Then you select the intact npc ship and check for mission. Accepting that mission will start the event properly.

When you want to leave the system, select your shuttle(s) and at the bottom select "return home"

Make sure you set your people there to working hours the whole time. and adjust it when they get back to base.

I stand corrected. I could not pick up a mission at the npc ship either. Perhaps there were captured crew in one of the ships i had to resque. But both ships had to many bots to my liking. So i cleared one ship ( most likely the wrong ship because there were no captured crew in there ) and looted what i could and then left after i encountered way more bots in the second ship.

Thanks for the tips. For some reason, when my shuttle arrived, I clicked around on the message on the right, and checked for an available mission on that friendly ship, but did not see any way to "start" the mission. I wonder if it's a bug that happens, or what.

When I got tired of dinking around with nothing more to do, I decided to abandon the mission by clicking the message on the right. You would think that would be enough to return your crew home without any extra steps.

It seems that if you have to override their schedules to work just to make it back, that's pretty strange. The game needs to give the player some clues, or make it more obvious, or eliminate the threat of them starving on the trip.

Hopefully, this area of the game will be polished a bit more. Maybe the "away mission" shuttles should be equipped with more room for food / water, inventory, oxygen, medical supplies, returning loot, more passengers, etc.
