Phoebus is the most popular, and my long time favorite, but vettlingr is growing on me. They're both in the most recent PeridexisErrant Starter Pack, which many of the YouTube tutorials use. Oh God—what's it called? My top pick is the gemset...? I haven't played in years, so I don't remember the name. But the designs are great. They remind me of NES JRPGs.

Meph's tileset[www.bay12forums.com]. Playing the game with it is such a delight and it looks really nice. It's stuck on pre-villains version ATM though as stuff it depends on such as DFHack and TWBT are yet to be updated. You would also need to generate a new world as it comes as a separate DF installation with a custom launcher (similar ot LNP).

I'd say Meph. Makes you forget the game is actually ASCII. I can't wait till Meph updates it to the new villains version.

How much tile will he be able to spend on that, with working on the new set for the Steam version of the game? Who knows though, maybe it will be a just a couple things to add and maybe he has some scripts for updating other stuff.

AFAIK the Steam tileset is mostly Mayday with Meph just helping out in some minor stuff (and much of it seemingly being done already anyway). Anyway, we'll not know until the DFHack and TWBT are updated because that's kinda the prerequisite to port it over. Not to mention that he said in the thread that he doesn't have access to his computer ATM as he seems to be out of town.

Get PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack (note that it's not available for the recently released "villains" update). It's a must for any newbie and also comes with these tilesets. Ironhand's the best imo

LNP is using an outdated system that breaks any more advanced tilesets such as Meph's (that's why Meph tileset has its own launcher and the version bundled with LNP is so woefully outdated). On top of that it seems to suffer from some performance issues that doesn't seem to happen with the Meph's tileset (which is also beautiful to look at, making DF look like a SNES game)

That's like asking what the best pizza toppings are.
You will get (and have already gotten) many different answers, because it is really a matter of opinion.
I myself though, would recommend either Ironhand, Phoebus, Mayday, or Meph.
Vettlingr is also an interesting option, should it ever be updated.
