I'd say it's more like O2Jam, the songs have keysounds so it's not just you hitting buttons at the rhythm of the beatmap, you're actually performing the music and sounds a bit iffy if you're out of the beat
DJMAX does have an OSU version and even that's better than the crappy version you have access to.
In other words, meet the ultimate game that inspired all the rip offs you see nowadays.
(scrolling) rhythm games:

the game OSU and several game modes took inspiration from those
the OSU circle pointer gameplay was inspired from *drummroll* OSU!

DJMAX on the other hand stays true all the way even on the hardest difficulty since pretty most of the songs have keysound while OSU is filled with maps made by amateurs who overcompensate for their lack of talent and patience in making keysounded maps by making the maps BING BANG WAHOO
Djmax on the other hand has no custom content. It's made by a handful of people on a payroll and with the resources to make everything keysounded. It's also made to appeal to as many people as possible, hence why there's no ridiculous difficulties.
Honestly, I don't get the hate for osu. People should really be playing as many rhythm games and difficulties as possible to improve themselves anyway.
So many already are there with much more interesting mapping than DjMax
Yeah mapping gets harder the further you get in osu!mania. There do be no keysounded maps but I doubt keysounds are enough to make mania players move to DjMax.
I personally find mapping in DjMax not interesting at all, 8 hours in and I can already high acc full combo 15 stars SC. To me DjMax is just not worth it. You get much more and challenging content from osu!mania.
But if you are learning rythm games DjMax could be a good option but so is osu!mania.
Quaver is better cause you can import Stepmania/Etterna and Osu!mania maps to it. But 4 keys are boring anyway so.
Dj Max Respect was initially made to be played with (drumroll) - gamepad, PS4 gamepad to be exact. It's the only classic VSRG that was designed to be played with a regular gamepad and hence you can see some limitations in charting outside of SC charts and a vast majority of content being focused on regular (controller-friendly) charts. SC charts are more of an afterthought, there is only one of them for a keymode and some songs don't have them at all. It does have unique content and unique stance on its design choices. At least it's a game. Osu!mania is just an empty shell for importing content from other rhythm games. Want some real challenge with an endless abyss of content? Give BMS a try. That'll sure keep you occupied for a life time.
Why people hate osu! is mainly due to its 'weird' charts and that copyright issues. and i believe you do know about it already if you've played osu for that long. OSU! could've been a great free rhythm game just like BMS nowadays, but it failed to manage it and so here we are now.
But, if you don't care about copyright stuff even in the slightest inch, you could say just go play osu and it's better and free and all that stuff, after all.
