Some thoughts on the odyssey (hard) and rambling on hero restrictions
Was it balanced specifically around the expecation that the player would use at least some powers during it? Or is it just that the only allowed hero i've unlocked is striker, who may be one of the WORST heros to use in an odyssey due to being leak prone early on, and i'd have had a MUUUCH easier time with the recommended hero for it?

Related: i keep getting annoyed at challenges being presented to the player that seem to expect you to have all the heros unlocked already. Which is fine for pushing players to try out different heros, there's just one. Little. snag:

They're just sooo pricy to unlock!!! am i expected to no life bloons for weeks AGAIN just to unlock them? even with the ability to replay maps at multiple difficulties

Seems like conflicting design goals clashing or something. I can see the logic behind each, it's just that the goals behind them aren't terribly compatible, or at least not the specific implementation.

...Either that or the main problem is how much of 5 I already played back in the day, and a completely fresh player would be able to treat "yeah you haven't unlocked this yet" as a signal for "you're probably not ready for this challenge yet".

are you aware that you're writing this at a nolifers forum? :) of course you should spend a lot of time, and you love this game, don't you?

but i wouldn't be rushing into odysseys because they're boring. even with all heroes unlocked.

I did the odyssey with Quincy and it was fine, definitely not one of the hardest.
They're HOPING you pay to unlock a hero, or better yet, Double Cash.

In the meantime, if you want to have fun and not give in, maybe just settle for the Easy and/or Normal mode until "Hard" is easy enough to be fun.

BTD6 is a pretty good game as far as being playable without Microtransactions, but it is still a microtransaction game and they are still trying to get a least some people to go for that.

Honestly, I bought 4 or 5 knowldge points and one pack of level-4's instras. Then the introducded the Tier 5 Insta pack that becomes available now and then and thought "That's absurd... if I start going for that, I'll be spending so much money it'll end up costing me more then Double Cash, and Double Cash [in the days before Race Passes] can help me earn everything else and more."

So bought Double Cash and stopped spending on any other Microtransactions - I've played a lot over MANY YEARS since then.

So, I'd suggest you either just go with what feels comfortable, GRIND COLLECTIONS, and/or get Double Cash...

Or, if Double Cash is too expensive, maybe just look for a game without Microtransactions to be honest...

UPDATE: I posted the above before I read your reference to BTD5. BTD5 all the "Agents" and in-game transactions were very very cheap compared to BTD6. Which is to say that took a serious "F-you" approach to pricing powers in 6 vs 5. All my advice still applies. Don't expect to be able to keep affording to buy stuff the way you could in 5... BTD6 is intended so that you can't afford to do that without real cash. You can only use powers "now and then."

I beat the odyssey on easy, changed to hard, thought i could handle hard easily enough, and...choked on the very last map and decided to stop throwing monkey money down the drain that wasn't going to give dividends. Wasn't nearly enough time left in the odyssey to rethink my strategy or even redo it on medium to recoup some of the wasted money. Not that there was MUCH rethinking i could do, since I couldn't even change my loadout without unlocking a hero or something.

I don't think quincy was a permitted option for that specific odyssey? Would probably have been a LOT easier if he was (or if i'd figured out that he was, in fact, one of the allowed options). The only permitted hero i had unlocked was...striker. Who, again, is probably worst odyssey hero cause of leaks adding up, and might not be a very good hero in general.

I got most of the way through the hard odyssey and choked on the last one. was on the last day when i gave the odysey a go, so there wasn't reallllly time to redo or rethink.

I actually avoided using agents or retries much in btd5 at all, because while powers/agents cost less there, you had a lot fewer replays on maps you were good at before you ran out of "quick money". I think i've weirdly used them more here than on my entire time in 5, but still pretty sparingly.

My bad habits stem mostly from massively overplaying on mount magma, a track that reaaaaally should've been in intermediate or even easy, because despite its relatively short track length most of the track was amazing killzone.

Slowly unlearning those bad habits, especially with watching some ISAB videos.

Long term I guess i'm hoping to get good enough to...maybe at least figure out how to beat ONE of the expert tracks on CHIMPS without following someone else's guide. :P

Quincy was definitely permitted, cus that's what I used.
that would probably have helped a ton, then.

He's talking about last week's odyssey and Quincy was definitely not in that roster. Stop gaslighting the poor lad.

Oh crap I'm so sorry, I was under the impression we were talking about the current odyssey, the one where you're only allowed t3 towers and it's all apopalypse mode.

That would be EXTREMELY different, yes.
