Linux release
Hi, I'm pretty excited for Skylines 2!

I understand if other things are taking priority at the moment, but I would hope that, eventually, a Linux native release comes out.

If that is the plan, I would love to see an announcement about it soon. As it is, the price tag is a bit tough to justify for me as a Linux user, because it's not exactly guaranteed that the Windows release will work smoothly under Proton. I'd like to see the dev team commit to either providing a native build, or fully supporting Proton and fixing any issues that may appear across the translation layer.

It would be disappointing if the sequel regressed in cross-platform compatibility versus the first game.

Would also love a Linux release, but Proton is insanely good right now. Noticed much better performance/stability from Proton in the past year. Numerous Windows builds now run without much interruption on Ubuntu 22.04.

Devs, if you commit to supporting Proton integration, thank you.

Yeah, I have quite a few games that work very well under Proton (notably: Elite Dangerous, Satisfactory, Generation Zero), but I've also run into a few examples of relatively recent games that remained broken - didn't render anything, or didn't play video clips, or crashed. That's why I'd like CO to at the very least explicitly validate for Proton on a distro of choice (SteamOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, whatever) so that we know we're not gonna be stuck waiting.

Also really interested in Linux release.
It's still on Unity, so should not be any problems (if only the devs didn't puted any libraries that are Windows only). And it's quite strange, because Cities Skylines had Linux release, and Paradox games (I know Paradox is not the dev, but the publisher) are quite known examples of having Linux support.

+1 for native GNU/Linux version. otherwise, no Tux no bucks. There are so many native GNU/Linux games that I rather support by my hard earned money those who care about and support GNU/Linux instead of those who do not care at all.
Hi @Outfrost, Im sorry about this but no, the Linux Release is not coming out. If you want to play the game, please switch to windows. I am sorry about this announcement but since Mac and Linux are really the same by likewise, they only have the 1% stronghold within steam. Please accept the faith

Waiting for the Linux release.

The problem is there just aren't that many developers well versed in Linux. The game uses DirectX, so you'd need people who could port the game over to Vulkan. That's a bigger undertaking than you might be expecting, you're more likely to get a crappy experience with a port by inexperienced developers.
It's actually better for them to just improve compatibility with Proton. At least that's experiential work, it might actually improve their familiarity with Linux and allow them to port future games with Linux in mind from the beginning rather than patching together an ill-thought out port.

You're coming at this with the wrong assumptions.

Cities: Skylines 2 is being developed in Unity. Colossal Order has worked in Unity for over a decade now, and all three titles they've released have Linux native builds available. We've been playing Cities: Skylines on Linux for 8 years now.

Unity makes it easy to ship for Linux, because it has rendering and platform code ready-made and abstracted away under a unified API and workflow, like any good engine does, so the game developer need not worry about the low-level details.

The only even remote reason that I can think of as to why they are not openly publicizing support for Linux at launch is because of their deals with Microsoft and Sony. They have been very careful in the vague wording of their canned responses about Linux and Mac support. This is of course just pure speculation on my part.

I am just waiting for a group of fed up content creators and modders to decide it would be better to just develop their own city building game from scratch, like the creators of 0 A.D. did when Microsoft originally gave up on Age of Empires. I would gladly help support that effort!

I would much prefer a native Linux release, even if not at the same time as the Win/Mac release in late October, but I guess if it runs well under Proton, that would be good enough.

Excuse me, Mr Fake Game Studio, why are you trying to speak with authority and why exactly should I listen to you?

I'm not gonna argue about this, you should just feel bad about posting this L take. If we get Linux support, you as a Windows user lose absolutely nothing. There is nothing you can gain from campaigning against a Linux port, apart from making some enemies online, yet you chose to do it anyway. Pathetic.
Hello there, Mr outfrost linux support isn't being released and I can share the screenshot with you as well. And stop being rude as I am just replying to your answer and btw the devs have also confirmed it.
The icons should display for which it is compatible and I haven't been rude I was just answering your question

No, they have not confirmed it. They have issued a vague statement saying that they may or may not release a Linux version. If you would post comments that actually contain facts and not pure speculation and nonsense, perhaps you would be treated a bit more politely.
