AC3 Remastered

Assassin's Creed 3 is one of the AC parts in which Desmond Miles - protagonist of the Abstergo Main story - still plays a role. Using Animus, Desmond travels to the 18th century in the time of the American Revolution and this time embodies two characters: The British Templar Haytham Kenway and the half-Indian Connor, who is trained as an assassin in the course of the game. The action adventure takes you to Boston, New York and the wilderness that still surrounded metropolises at the time.

DLC: The Tyranny of King Washington

This new campaign asks a pretty humongous "what if?". What if George Washington, the iconic American leader, was corrupted by power? Those who played ACII will remember the Eden puzzle, revealed throughout the course of the campaign, as Ezio discovered Glyphs dotted around renaissance Italy. The premise being that prominent historical figures were somehow entwined in the alternate history of the Assassin's Creed franchise. During that campaign, the seed of a potential plot device was planted: we saw George Washington clutching a piece of Eden. At the time, it was but a small tease in the greater tapestry of the Assassin's mythos. Here, that seed's grown and taken root as the heart of ACIII's alternate history DLC. How does the story unfold? That's for you to find out, but I can say that much: It's awesome to see a different and optional direction of story.

AC3: Liberation Remastered

In contrast to the great Assassin's Creed 3, you don't take on the role of Connor, the Indian assassin, but of Aveline, a French, dark-skinned merchant's daughter from New Orleans around 1760. At the beginning of the game, you experience how Aveline is abandoned by her mother Jeanne as a young girl and becomes a student of the master assassin Agate. After a time jump, you finally take on the role of the adult Aveline - and the adventure begins immediately. If you've played any of the other titles in the series, you'll know that the story starts out quite mysterious, but as the game progresses, it develops into a complete tale of betrayal, war between Templars and Assassins, and much more. AC3: Liberation also makes no difference here. One point in which the title stands out from the other offshoots of the series is that the story this time has nothing to do with Desmond, the "real" series protagonist. Nevertheless, the sinister corporation Abstergo and their Animus project are woven into the story this time as well.

Basically, Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered offers exactly what you would expect from such a "new look". Most of the changes are therefore of a visual nature. The higher-resolution textures and the significantly sharper edges are immediately noticeable compared to the original. Ubisoft has also tweaked the lighting, bathing New York, Boston and New Orleans in new light. Both AC3 and Liberation look noticeably better compared to the vanilla version. Liberation has made the biggest leap compared to the original PS Vita version. In addition, some environments have also been reworked. There is now a bit more detail in the cities, and the character models have been updated in places. The frame rate is stable with very few exceptions, at least if you follow this guide.

On the negative side, popping bushes and crates stand out. This does not ruin the harmonious overall picture, but the popping objects are especially noticeable in the borderlands. There are also performance issues that I've already mentioned and several visual bugs like glitching enemies once kicked into barrels etc. There was not a single gamebreaking bug and all of them were pretty harmless, but it could've been executed better. There were also several missions where the checkpoint was completely off and I couldn't finish the "optional tasks" due to the bad checkpoint.


Apart from the enhanced graphics, there are a few small changes in the game that distinguish the new edition from the original. However, you should not expect anything earth-shattering here. For example, you'll meet more passers-by on the streets, who gather in denser groups. The cities still don't reach the level of the crowds in Assassin's Creed Unity by a long shot, but the towns now seem a bit more lively, which can be quite a hindrance when fleeing from guards.

The other gameplay changes are actually rather small details. For example, the HUD looks a bit more modern, and there are additional options for colorblind people. You can also craft a few new weapons. As a nice bonus, you can also unlock the costumes of almost all previous assassins via the Ubi Club, including Alexios and Bayek.

The ship and climbing controls also remain largely unchanged. Here you notice that Ubisoft has noticeably developed further in the subsequent parts. Compared to Bayek or Kassandra, Connor (again) more often gets stuck on small corners or involuntarily jumps to his death. I also miss a "sneak/crouch" button, which seems odd not to have. This was all still 'normal' at release, but today we know how it could also work better.




Ubisoft delivers with Assassin's Creed 3: Remastered, exactly what I expect from a remaster these days. The graphical updates are immediately noticeable even without a direct comparison. They are not a technical revolution because of that, but Connor and Aveline have never climbed through a more beautiful America, especially if you use some kind of "ReShade" to boost visual effects.

The gameplay adjustments, apart from the increased pedestrian traffic, are quite nice in my eyes, but hardly worth mentioning. Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered plays exactly like the original at its core. That goes for the fun combat, but also the somewhat choppy climbing and the annoying "eavesdropping missions". These are things that are solved much better in the sequels. If you own the Odyssey Season Pass anyway, or haven't played Connor's adventure yet, then a detour into the American setting won't hurt at all. Despite some outdated gameplay mechanics, Assassin's Creed 3 is still a recommendable game.

Only OGs remember the unreal AC3 hype in 2012.

This will be forever one of my favorite AC games. The game came out during my 11th/12th grade year in High School right when I was taking US History. It was absolutely EPIC to learn about the revolution in school and go home and play it in Assassins Creed. I adored experiencing the story of the American colonies and the events in Boston on school and then at home so much, I barely even had time for my girlfriend. Being able to experience history through both mediums made this a 10/10 when I first played it.

Remastering makes a good game better, there are very few cases where a bad game gets better with a simple remaster. AC3 was always fantastic, Remastering it just made it shine more.

The world looks miles better, the people look like total s**t. It’s kinda buggy on controls but the combat and climbing’s still good as ever. Colonial America looks completely transformed. Gone are the grey filters and lifeless streets. Now It feels like Boston and New York are actual cities with very unique personalities.

It has all the good parts and bad parts of the original version when it comes to gameplay. For example, the combat is extremely smooth and fluid while attempting to play stealthily is still a pain in the ass due to the oversensitive detection meter of the guards.

Connor was my personal favorite character in all of AC. He's hyper focused, loyal, and stoic yet kind and deeply sensitive and understanding. He was slightly hindered by the writing of the story, but you can definitely see his character shining through.

I also love how Ac3 is kind of cinematic. It is more touching and handcrafted in its cutscenes. I was blown away by how some simple stuff was made interesting and "artful" on Haytham's initial segments.

On a whole, I would definitely say that it's worth the money. If you enjoyed the original AC III, then you're sure to enjoy the remastered version as well. If you've never played AC III, I'd still wholeheartedly recommend this as long as you keep in mind that this is mainly a combat game and not a traditional AC game where stealth is very important.

Assassin's Creed III Remastered is a remaster of the original AC III, including all it's DLC and AC Liberation.
In the present day you, once again, follow Desmond Miles in his efforts to stop an impending disaster that could destroy humanity. To do this Desmond must relive the memories of another of his ancestors, Ratonhnhaké:ton/Connor, a Native American driven to join the Assassins in order to protect his people and avenge the burning of his village.

• Combat is probably the best and most brutal of the original games.
  
• Naval combat is great.
  
• Good weapon variety. There are also new weapons like the bow and the rope dart.
  
• Graphics are a huge improvement over Revelations and, for the most part, an improvement over the original.
  
• Good story.
  
• Connor and Haytham's debates about the differing ideals of their factions, which help to shed a new light on both the Assassins and the Templars.
  
• Parkour is an improvement over the previous games. You can now climb trees and rocks.
  
• Homestead missions are great and show another side to Connor's character that the main story doesn't.
  
• Connor's suit is my favourite.
  
• The Tyranny of King Washington is a good DLC, although the map feels empty.
  
• Modern day missions are pretty good.
  
• Fantastic soundtrack.

• Poor optimization. Relugar fps drops in Boston.
  
• Characters' faces look like they're made of wax. A huge step down from the original AC III.
  
• Some of the rock textures in the Homestead area are really bad. The texture's pattern repeats far too often.
  
• Enemy shooting markers don't work properly. I got shot regularly even though the marker wasn't bright red yet. It also doesn't show up at certain angles.
  
• The longest intro out of any AC game.
  
• Poor story pacing. Some important reveals are made off-screen.
  
• Optional objectives. They're a blight in AC games.
  
• Terrible modern day ending that pretty much killed the modern day storyline.
  
• Having to use the tunnels to unlock fast travel stations.
  
• Viewpoints don't reveal the whole map. You have to walk around to fully reveal it. Terrible decision.
  
• Collectibles, though not as many as the other games.
  
• AC Liberation isn't interesting.

Assassin's Creed III Remastered is a decent upgrade over the original, although some things are definitely downgraded, and comes bundled with all it's DLC and AC Liberation.
The game itself isn't perfect but it has a good story, great combat and a fantastic soundtrack that, in my opinion, rivals the Ezio trilogy.

Everytime I see the beauty of the American frontier in this game, I cannot shake the urge to build a Walmart there

Assassin’s Creed 3 is a frustrating experience from its introduction all the way to the end. It’s a rollercoaster of loving and hating it.

Faces and character models are probably the most noticeable issue with the remaster. They look like clay or plastic with weird eyes, in the case of Desmond everything is wrong. The models & faces also get worse when the remasters lighting gets overblown with everything being too bright or way too dark, although MINOR adjustments can be made in the settings.

Gameplay wise the Parkour system is something. It’s hold one button to do everything and when it works, IT WORKS but there were so many times where it just didn’t work. Connor would jump onto the smallest objects, jump to the wrong parkour point, go where I’m not directing, jump to a latch point, fail to climb, Jump to his death instead of doing a leap of faith (mostly seen in the frontier sync points) and more.
I found Parkour somewhat disappointing in certain areas compared to prior titles such as the frontier with its tree parkour having limited paths and while there is some variety it’s not enough for the time you spend there. As for city areas, rooftop traversal was not to the quality of Florence, Venice or Constantinople.
P.S: Haytham can’t climb trees. It's not a bug.

Combat took a while to get used to with its timing, combo & counter system that requires a little more thought than the mindless variations seen in the Ezio trilogy but once you get used to knowing which enemies can break your combo flow/how they react to a few attacks, AC3’s combat feels fluid and reflective of Connor. He is an angry warrior and it reflects in every way when it comes to his brutality and aggressive treatment of enemies with his weapons. It’s a sight to behold and satisfying to initiate. That being said it can also be frustrating due to the harsh notoriety system that at the highest level will have AI spawning constantly and endlessly until you try to escape and reach notoriety reducing mechanics.

Stealth absolutely sucks its better to just fight. It doesn’t work and when it’s needed it’s a pain in the ass. Enemy AI detection is on steroids (this doesn’t help with aforementioned) with them spotting you near instantly and even if you break vision & hide, they will track you down through walls BUT DO NOTHING but stare until you actually appear in their line of sight thus initiating a fight. If a unit is on a roof and spots you but you hide behind a building they will stare at you through the building for a hefty duration before returning to their initial position. It’s insane and it’s not fun.

Fast Travel does exist but outside of the frontier it will require exploration from the player to unlock further fast travel points in the cities via the underground system. Within the underground you’ll have to traverse tunnels via running & platforming while holding a lantern to find puzzle doors. These puzzles upon completion will open & unlock a fast travel point in the over world. Excess Fast Travel is not available just for the sake of it and while I can appreciate the unique experience and unlock method, it can get annoying at times to unlock something that can reduce tedium. Frontier fast travel points are tied to shops or forts and THAT IS VERY FRUSTRATING.

Hunting is available in the frontier with a variation of animals (bears, deer, elk, rabbits etc.) and is introduced during the story. It has side challenges linked to it so you can find yourself climbing through the trees (aforementioned issues aside) hunting from above if you're a completionist. The same applies for naval combat although limited to mission selection unlike black flag/rogue open world. Naval combat is GREAT!

It should be noted that Connor’s upgrades and the economy are tied to hunting & the homestead but the game doesn’t tell you about the upgrade system, so unless you google it out of curiosity after playing the previous games, you will probably end the game having sold your pelts and items for cash rather than crafting extra bag space, unique items etc.

Assassin recruits return in AC3 and while having a basic tutorial it does not elaborate by exploring the rank up/dispatch system, so google that if you can. Unlike past entries recruits are no longer overpowered, they can be useful but you’ll need to upgrade them through the dispatch system and they can't be used in the frontier.

Regarding the story. I just have to sigh. It does Connor dirty in a lot of ways.
From the get go, Connor is undermined by Haytham who has charm and swagger that rivals Ezio and you spend a hefty amount of time with him prior to your first experience with Connor, I believe it’s 3-4 sequences and there’s 12 total in the game. Throughout that time Ubisoft did a great job at making you invested in his character & goals, so when it swaps you to Connor and puts you in a child sequence without access to the open world, it becomes jarring and puts Connor on the back foot.

It doesn’t help that it takes a while for Connor to grow up and even then due to weird decisions that basically split his personality between Main Story & Side missions, Connor becomes a generic rage filled vengeance seeking child with little variation and the words CHARLES LEE. It also takes longer for you to connect and get invested because of this switch.

Connor also suffers due to a few time skips so that we can get to historical moments. He basically plays a big role in each moment and while they are awesome set pieces, we miss out on conversations etc. & personal events between characters that are crucial or important to Connor, only for them to be mentioned & referenced later in dialogue in a way that makes you question when that even occurred or how a character knew that information outside implication.

As I mentioned before, the big issue with AC3's Main story is that for some reason they split Connor by putting all of his charm, care, interest and depth into optional missions rather than showing an ounce of it in THE MAIN STORY, it leaves you with a negative view on Connor because he never really changes or shows any significant depth to himself outside of being angry & naive. This split also affects the main story because if one doesn’t play those optional Homestead missions (YOU SHOULD) any threat has no significance to the player because they don’t have a connection to those around the homestead or Connor's care for those people outside of Achilles.

Homestead missions provide so much to Connor that it’s a shame a lot of people will miss them. That being said Connor has his moments throughout the story with his anger & frustration about the treatment of his people and land, the stellar interactions he has with Haytham & Achilles (moreso in the homestead) & the interactions he had with the Templars during the corridor sequences. These moments were a blast to experience with especially Haytham but they were very short in regards to the overall experience and weren’t enough to showcase Connor on his own.

On that note, the speeches and conversations between Haytham & Connor about the Templars methods were brilliant, perfectly acted and just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great. The Templars overall in AC3 were fascinating, there was ambiguity, they weren’t just bad guys for the sake of bad guys/pieces of Eden, they had causes they had reasons separate from each other.

At the end of the day Assassin’s Creed 3 is frustrating. Whether you will enjoy it or not I cannot say because there’s a lot to love and a lot to hate about the game and experiences will vary. It’s worth at least giving the game a try but of course it’s best to pick up on sale if you’re doing so.
