Noita

Noita is deeper than you think (origin of Hiisi)
There are hundreds of Hiisi in the Noita world, but our character is the only woman.

I think our character had lots and lots of babies, abandoned them, and now whenever they see us, they are filled with frustration and try to harm us.

Not trying to dismiss you here, but what supporting evidence is there that
a) our character is a woman
and
b) the Hiisi are ours and not, say, we just happen to be a reality-travelling sorcerer who likes to raid ancient temples for their magical tomes and wands?

The only evidence that the main character is female is the title of the game (Noita translates to Witch) but Witch is not necessarily a gender-dependent title.

There's also no evidence that none of the creatures inhabiting the caves are female. A good number seem male but the models are vague enough that some of them could be women.

And finally, having THAT many kids and still being fit enough to plunder a gigantic cave seems ludicrous.

Noita IS actually pretty deep and interesting but the depth lies in the background lore and universe the game takes place in. The protagonist seems to be nothing more than a person trying to find the secret of transmutation and attain general magical power.

Yap, I read the title of the game translating to Witch, but as you said, that doesn't have to be gender specific. Just like mage, wizard, etc. aren't necessarily gender specific.

Also agree on your other arguments. Provided that our character is roughly human with a ~9 month pregnancy cycle, I don't think you could even live long enough to spew out that many kids without some crazy immortalisation-spell and being constrained to some birth-optimizer.

Hiisi is sometimes translated to goblin, which seems fitting in this game. Do witches give birth to goblins?

According to the show Goblin Slayer... Yes. Yes they do. It would also explain why they're still aggressive toward each other. Don't watch the show.

You're right about the Noita being a woman. The noita is named Mina. You only find this out if you die to one of your own non-explosive projectiles. But you're wrong about the Hiisi. Hiisi translates to devil, and is most often used to describe hell. The interesting thing is the Hiisi seem to be quite technologically advanced. They don't use magic. They seem to be born from the technology egg shown in the starting cut scene. They're dressed like miners. One of the Hiisi is called a Toimari, which means CEO. He summons others to fight you. So I think these guys are hell miners. They've created the hiisi base or "hell base" to study the secrets of the work. But they don't understand it because they don't understand magic. So they guard the work until they can study it better. Or perhaps they do understand the work, and want to make sure nobody uses it.

Noita translates to Witch

It's the most direct transliteration which is why everyone says this, and it's the most common search result you get, but if you dig a bit deeper you'll find some pages that try to put the word in a more cultural context. The West generally associates "witch" with being female, that's true, but a much closer approximation to the actual intent of the meaning of Noita is something like "shaman" or "medicine man."

Still a strange thing to use for your bland run of the mill descriptor like "sorcerer" or "wizard," but maybe they just don't have a word in Finnish that's closer to that?

But we already know that the Hiisi reproduce asexually; just slap one of the toimari and a fresh new jetpacker will pop out.

Wizard => Velho
Sorcerer => Loitsija
Sorceress => Velhotar
Tietäjä is also a (old) title used for somebody with knowledge in magic:

Noita is also the Finnish word used for this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noaidi

Noita is sometimes translated to "mage".
Here's an example from Stand Still, Stay Silent.

I dare to say that almost no one would translate noita to either of those. You could use words like shamaani and poppamies for those. Then again, the translations aren't completely wrong and work well in the context of the game.

Havn't the devs clarified that our character is NOT the "Noita" in question? It is more likely that we are an alchemist of some kind. That said, I feel the story is intentionally sparse, so you can make it be whatever you want. This is not a story based game lol.
