i had just gotten the gun and approached the blueville door. i couldn't get in yet so i went through another area to the right, ending up in an area with a pumpkin farm and a dude telling me to clear some graves. i can't figure out how to get back. i also can't figure out how to clear graves. i keep heading deeper and deeper, chasing after this blue guy i guess, but all i really want to do is get back to where i was and finish up the things i hadn't done yet there...

Unfortunately, until you get some more tools in your toolkit, entering that area is a one-way journey. Fortunately for you, you're exactly where you are supposed to be. If you could teleport back to the entrance to the blue city, you mother would tell you to turn around and go get the blue mcguffin first, which is exactly what you're en route to do. As far as graves go, there's a couple other people who have asked that exact question recently, this post might be helpful, if you're okay with some mild spoilers.

i'll avoid it until i get desperate if it's something i should have already seen. if i just haven't gotten there yet i wanna get there myself. now i have a new question, how on earth does the metal floaty ability work? other than just moving objects out of my way i can't do much with it. i've tried riding a piece of metal but it's far too wobbly to get me anywhere. the up and down options don't do anything for me other than jump and crouch, i can't control metal at all, i just attract it.

edit; omg i figured it out. that is a weeeeird mechanic.
