Personally, I'd agree that the main campaign (OC) is not that great, but some people absolutely love it. So if you've tried it and you don't like it, fair enough, welcome to the club! But if not, maybe give it a chance regardless and form your own opinion.
Alternatively, you could try the second campaign, Shadows of Undrentide (SoU), which also starts at level 1 with a new character, and you are expected to continue with that character in the third campaign, Hordes of the Underdark (HotU), which according to many is the best of the three. You could also skip directly to HotU, if you don't mind starting with a high level character and missing a few references (or possibly running into some spoilers) to the other two campaigns.
A few shorter premium modules are also included for free in the main game package (e.g. Kingmaker or Witch's Wake - the latter is part one of an unfinished series), but IMO, the bigger purchasable DLCs like Darkness Over Daggerford and maybe Tyrants of the Moonsea are worth getting, Pirates of the Sword Coast is decent as well. You can also download a few acclaimed community modules in-game, which are all great (Aielund Saga, Against the Cult of the Reptile God, Eye of the Beholder, Almraiven+Shadewood, A Hunt Through the Dark ...).
And there is an insane amount of more free community modules like that available at the Neverwinter Vault[neverwintervault.org], but it's hard to recommend anything without knowing what you're looking for, since there are so many different ones.
And then there are online multiplayer worlds (PW) on top of it ...
I've only skimmed through headlines - won't it be best to include the tools to actually search for mods in such a guide? There's NWVault Metadata Viewer which makes searching for a mod with the desired setting much, much easier.
After some discussion in the community, those were chosen as perhaps the most useful.
Lots of ways to cut the cake, of course.
The NWVault Metadata Viewer which you mentioned doesn't include anything made after 2013.
Well, it doesn't but between 2002 and 2013 is still good 10+ years of modding. I didn't mean to say it's "the only" thing to use, but it's certainly a decent tool in the toolbox of searching for content and organizing it.

Give us something to work with then. Which replies left you lost and why? Why couldn't you get far in the main campaign? Was it too difficult or boring to you? What are you looking for in NWN, what did you hope to find? Answering any of these would give us a better idea about what sort of replies could be more helpful to you. The playerbase is just too diverse for universally relevant answers/posts.
