To be clear, I'm not talking about the official single player campaign but about the game's many different facets, single player, multiplayer, modding, even guiding a group as dungeon master. The official single player content is not that unique, but the combination of all the different parts is, and especially the possibility for everyone to create their own adventures or host their own online worlds. I know of no other game editor that is this versatile and at the same time easy to work with, even for beginners. There are myriads of free, fan-made but high quality adventures and campaigns to download and dozens of multiplayer online worlds to play on, all created by a prolific modding community.
Come to think of it, the only thing I can think of that comes close to the style of Neverwinter nights is another BioWare game called Dragon Age. Maybe give those a try, they are all fantastic.
And if it's only the age that keeps you from trying Baldur's Gate, there are more modern games trying to mimick the style, like Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, Pathfinder: Kingmaker etc.
Oh yeah, I thought of mentioning Old republic but it's SciFi and I figured they wanted fantasy
But yes, very much in the same vein as NWN
That's true. NWN is the game that keeps on giving long after the initial price. It's had a strong fan base ever since it was released :) tons and tons of fan made content.
It's not quite D&D, modding is harder, but gameplay feels somewhat similar.
Echo that BG series is highly worthwhile, too.
Also Valheim reminds me a lot NWN1 specially my days of multiplayer
