Do you like trying to topple an overpowering force of aliens over the course of three in-game days?
Do you like DRIVING CAAARS?
Do you like better physics engines where you can pick up stuff and throw it at people?
Do you like using a billion-dollar weapon which only use is to throw things at people, but better this time?
Do you like huge three legged spiders that shoot at you with their oversized and compensative cannons?
If zero or more apply to you, then you are eligible to step into the shoes of Gorgeous Freeman for the second time, and learn that Valve can make convoluted plot lines and solid gameplay in the same series consistently.
Wow, you really sold me the game, huh? Well by your description it seems HL2 has more action, so that makes me consider it.
Ironically this is a fast paced Quake game.
Fun fact: I found Quake boring too.
lol nah in real talk tho, this game wasn't intended to be a fast paced rail shooter with a lackluster or non-existent story like most of the PC first person shooters that came out around the same time. This game was designed to be a good blend of action, suspense, and story telling without taking you out of first person or taking control away from you for most of the time. On top of that it was the first game from the company. That being said, Half-Life 2 is much more fast paced than the first, while still adhering to all it was intended to be, since Valve learned a lot from their experience making the first game. It kept me on my toes for most, if not all of the game my first time through, and same goes for the episodes. If you want the original Half-Life that feels more modern and a bit faster paced, look into getting Black Mesa, the fan remaster that's being built.
It's curious since I really love classic Doom. It's got a lot of action without letting the puzzles behind. Also, I like storytelling in videogames, even if that requires they have to be slow-paced, just like Portal. My problem with the first HL is that is even slower than Portal, and nothing interesting happens on its story to make me continue the game (I cut it off in the rails scene).
Half-Life is one of my favorite games of all time. It obviously has flaws. I do find some of the parts in this game slow, but my favorite part is speedrunning it. I don't play it just for that though. If you think it's too slow, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtI5HM7GVGY . HL21 is a speedrun of HL1 done in 20:41. It's an amazing run that's slow in the beginning, but by the end, you're confused on how one of them even accomplished that. I find HL1 fun because there's always new ways that you can do things whenever I play it. Finding oversights by the developers and using them to your advantage in this game is great. Seriously, look into HL21, and try it again.
HL2, is slow paced at times, but HL2 Done Quicker is another example of how slow games can be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnFjTG9J-T8 . HL2DQ is once again, another segmented run with many players who are amazing at HL2, and they show off the capabilities of the new HL2 engine. I also love HL2 because of this reason. Accelerated Backwards Hopping, Prop Boosting, all that stuff, it's just fun and I really love how it works. I like to speedrun, but the HL games are the top when it comes to this.
[NOTE: Making a slow game faster doesn't always make it more fun.]
