It should definitely be more challenging than befriending others, but it'd be nice to at least be able to establish a sort of mutual professional respect and maybe unlock the ability to work together on certain endgame designs or comissions.
Althogh a lot of the characters in this game are pretty interesting and complex, part of the charm of it is that none of them are really bad and all of them in their own way seem to want what's best for Portia. It makes having a character so beyond redemption living in the town feel off putting. At least if the option to befriend is there like it is with every other named character it gives him a little more depth and the player a little more freedom.
Not only is he losing orders to this new guy, but giving them to an upstart workshop with no real production facilities would be setting back Portia's progress, at least in the short term. All of this has to be frustrating for Higgins, and it's not surprising to me that he's kind of a jerk to us.
There's a really interesting character to be developed there, whether through rivalry or partnership.
Or should I say seriously?
Disliked? Why would I dislike him? Sure, he's little annoying at times, but the only time he was truly rude ordering you to gather materials for project and then being like "bye, looser!", he also felt bad about it and gave you money as a compensation. There's nothing to dislike about Higgins really. The way he walks around Commerce Guild every single morning just to get THE BEST commission is actually pretty sad. I feel sorry for the guy.
As long as the story makes sense, isn't lazy writing, or "Mary Sue"
I don't agree with this, I think Higgins is completely unattractive, He's mean, he calls the player a twerp, reminds me of someone who would be a really selfish/abusive person and a bad boyfriend.
I frankly do not care about his backstory as I don't agree with trying to change people into something that the character really isn't.
I don't think a 180 turn around with Higgins is realistic and I would find it bad writing just because 5 or so people are really into him.
But then again, This is not my story, it is your story, so you should take suggestions on both sides with a grain of salt, so to speak.
McDonald is bae... not sure if my next artwork will be of him or a Ginger body pillow... maybe him sleeping with a Ginger body pillow? We shall see.
I don't see any appeal in him and would rather see some new blood move into the city to add some more potential lovers instead of turning him into one as he's pretty clear he flat out hates you and doesn't care to get to know you.
Ha, I thought about that one a lot. I mean technically he does own a shop/house in Portia, which is quite unexpected, especially since he also apparently leaves a note saying he doesn't know when he'll be BACK. Which could imply that he's at least considering coming to Portia? But even if the character wasn't someone to "settle down" - that doesn't necessarily means he can't be in a relationship. He could just stay a few days longer with his S/O in Portia, dunno, maybe a week or something, and then do his usual travelling for the rest of the month. Y'know what they say, good things are worth waiting for.
Shane as in from Stardew Valley? he's bae tho I see where you are implying the two on the same boat, but their reasons are different to a point where it makes sense why Shane is more fitting with the farmer than Higgins with the builder.
Your point stands on Higgins so I don't need to explain much--With the workaholic added as a trait, someone that realistic would not work with anyone in general. I KNOW he worked hard get his family off being poor, but seeing his personality like how he accused the builder for stealing his Axe (that he had broke) I'm definite that he should stay as a rival. He doesn't show intention of wanting to befriend the builder despite the Civil Corps or Dr. Xu (in his event) tell him to apologize. So I agree with you, Vex!
For Shane on the other hands, has depression and drinks beer to wash the pain away. Shane will start off anti-social because--obviously, he doesn't know the farmer. And as you gradually get to know Shane, he just doesn't want anyone to stand where he is at giving up their dreams. Eventually, Shane gets better--not his habits maybe--but still trying to be better. He even thank the farmer for putting an effort talking to him. Shane, in my opinion, is someone many people probably can connect to.
That's how I see Shane personally in my opinion.
Ah do not get me wrong, Higgins does do some mean things, but I also respect him for his hard work and determination to be in the number one spot. The fact that he is so unfriendly and prickly makes me wish to befriend him out of a bit of spite, sure, but also since no one seems to like him in town I find it very sad he has no one to be friends with, even if he does not have the time or desire to be friends with anyone I feel it must be very lonely for him at times.
Even if we had the option to be friends with him , though I imagine it would be extremely difficult, I would be happy.
Just make it really difficult to win his friendship, if you want to keep it realistical.
As a possible quest line for Higgins becoming romanceable... how about after he once more snatched a quest before you could take it, he suddenly vanishes.
Antoine would be the first to notice, that Higgins doesn't come in early every morning and tells you of his concerns.
Maybe Higgins had an accident in one of the hazardous ruins or is stuck somewhere else in an uninhabited area.
If the player agrees to search for him, Antoine gives him a copy of the quest Higgins took.
Which gives clues as to where Higgins would have gone looking for materials.
(If the player sais 'forget it - gotta use the opportunity to get ahead of Higgins', then the civil corps will go find him eventually and any chance to romance Higgins is void.)
Well after finding him the player has to take him back to Dr Xu's clinic.
