Day of Memories?

So... How do I sign up for Day of Memories? I showed up, listened to the speech and waited for the quest to start, but can't pick up any items, because I'm "not a participant".

I don't remember there being any sort of sign up process. The two times I have participated I've just been able to start picking up the badges as soon as it begins.

I have this exact issue as well. The next patch is coming very soon so we'll both see if it's fixed or not.

I had the same experience as nuttyrodent: I just went around picking them up, no sign-up. I have only done the festival once.

edit: it might be worth a try to end the game, log completely out of steam, clean your cache and try again. It also might not hurt to remove the output log txt document from saves folder.

Maybe you were standing too far away from the gathering when the event started?
You should be automatically given a confetti-cannon when the event starts.
Unless your inventory was full by chance?

It does say that if you wander out of town, that you'll be disqualified. Not sure where the border is for that, as most of the time I was right where the weekly meetings trigger when the event started. But if you're outside the gate, that could certainly be a problem.
